'Schmidt' Wins L.A. Film Critics Award

LOS ANGELES - Jack Nicholson's new film About Schmidt has been named the best movie of 2002 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

About Schmidt, helmed by Election and Citizen Ruth director Alexander Payne, centers on a retired widower in the Midwest (Nicholson) who goes on a road trip to meddle in the wedding plans of his daughter (Hope Davis) and her boyfriend (Dermot Mulroney).

Nicholson tied for best actor with Daniel Day-Lewis, who plays a ruthless killer in Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York, a 19th-century epic that also stars Leonardo Dicaprio and Cameron Diaz.

Other winners included: Julianne Moore, best actress for Far From Heaven and The Hours; Pedro Almodovar, best director for Talk to Her; Chris Cooper, supporting actor for Adaptation; and Edie Falco, supporting actress for Sunshine State.

Last year, the association picked In the Bedroom as best film, Denzel Washington as best actor for Training Day and Sissy Spacek as best actress for In the Bedroom.

The 28th annual awards were announced over the weekend and will be presented next month at a ceremony in Santa Monica.
