Hello:
Welcome to September.  By now our children are back in school, and we, here at OSC, are back and ready for what I'm sure will be an exciting year!
Moving is never easy.  After the excitement wears off, spouses are often left with a very lonely feeling, and they begin missing all the wonderful friends they left behind.  Many Marines moved their families to Yuma this summer, and now is the perfect time for these spouses to get out and meet some new friends.  One way to accomplish this is by attending our Annual OSC Welcome Aboard Membership Night on Friday, September 29 at 5:30 in the O'Club.  Please come out and see what OSC has to offer you this year.  Not only will you meet other wonderful ladies from other units, but you will also learn about our charitable projects .  There will be door prizes, and opportunities to find out about our new book club!  I look forward to seeing you there.
OSC's vary slightly throughout the Marine Corps, and if you have any suggestions, we would love to hear from you.  If there is event you would like to help coordinate, please let me know.  I really would like to see more individuals volunteering, rather than units, to host our monthly function.  Again, by participating, not only will you help our charitable projects, like Holiday Baskets and scholarships, but you will build friendships which will carry you through your time in Yuma, AZ.
Sincerely,
A.  Price

Coffee Talk

The Dish on Our Coffee Groups

Text Box: VMA-214 - The Black Sheep are one big happy family again.  We will be bidding farewell to the "Black Cats" as they are preparing for their deployment.  We wish Major Blake and his marines a safe deployment.
Our coffee this month will be hosted by our Flight Surgeon's wife, Amy.  We are having an evening of BUNCO.  Amy, a fellow teacher, is also finding the time to prepare some delicious lasagna for us.  We are all looking forward to this evening of fun.
The Black Sheep will bid farewell to Major and Mrs. Rahe, Major and Mrs. Smith, and Major Dowell at our next Hail and Farewell.  We wish you all a safe and wonderful journey to your next destination.
That's all for now.
-Aurora

Ms. Etiquette:

Do people still send thank you notes?  Isn't saying thank you in person the same?

Signed,

Thankful, but not in written form.

Yes, thank you notes are still appreciated and appropriate.  Often times, this is the only way the sender knows that her gift arrived. In addition to gifts,  I personally like to send a short thank you for dinner parties and for coffees.  The hostess will always appreciate a warm and heart felt thank you for all of her hard work.

Now, here is the exception for thank you notes.  If you bring a hostess gift, the hostess does not need to send you a thank you.  The hostess gift is your way of saying thank you for inviting me, so by the hostess sending a thank you, she would basically be saying, thank you for the thank you.

As my sister once told my niece, she may not always remember ever gift she has given through the years, but she always remember the gifts she gave and did not receive a thank you for.

Remember to keep being polite until next month!

 GetFit Tip of the Month

By Tara Hawkins

The benefits of exercise

Working fitness into your lifestyle is more important than many items that will consume your time this week.  In fact, I believe that if you dont take the time to take care of yourself it will be difficult, if not impossible to do a quality job taking care of the other priorities in your life.

Most people know that they should exercise, but sometimes they lose sight of why it is important to stay physically active.  The Surgeon General reports that physical activity can have several positive benefits for women:

Reduces the risk of developing coronary heart disease

Helps maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints.

Helps control weight, build lean muscle and reduce body fat.

Reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression and fosters improvements in mood and feelings of well being.

This list of exercise benefits provides good motivation to begin or maintain and exercise program.  Once you establish the habit of exercise make it as routine as brushing your teeth.  Here are some tips to fit exercise into a busy life:

Begin conservatively.  Start with a goal of exercising three days a week, just 30 minutes each time at a perceived exertion of easy to moderate.  As you gain fitness you can increase your duration of one workout and keep the others shorter.

Set short-term goals.  Daily and weekly.

Set long-term goals.  Up to 6 months out, a race or fitness competition of some sort.

Join forces.  Get your friends and family to join you.  A partner meeting you will get you up and going.

Plan a rest.  Your body needs rest to absorb the benefits of exercise.  At least one day of rest per week.  As your program progresses you may want to incorporate a week of rest or easy days following two or three weeks of more intense training.

Get creative.  Think outside of the box.  Jump rope, climb stairs, run up and down the hill in your back yard, play tag with your kids.  Your workouts dont have to be the same old thing day after day!

Establishing exercise as a regular part of your lifestyle can pay big dividends.   Some benefits are realized during or shortly after a workout while others are like small investments, which over time will pay off big! SemperFit
