Welcome to SMAMUN 2006.

My name is Faraz Talat and I am the director of Disarmament and International Security. I have participated in several MUN's in the past few years, the most recent being LUMUN 2005. This is one of the few committees where the debate needs to be aggressive and yet highly diplomatic, which makes it one of the most intriguing areas of SMAMUN. I look forward to meeting you all I hope that you find the proceedings as much enjoyable as they are informative. If you have any queries, please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]

Best of luck to all of you!

Topic A:  Iran Nuclear Enrichment Programme

Despite numerous threats of sanctions, Iran plans to continue its nuclear enrichment programme. The question still lingers whether Iran has the legal right to develop nuclear power. Iran denies that it intends to use the technology for development of nuclear arsenal, but United States and its allies have expressed suspicion. Disarmament and International Security is required to come forth with a resolution deciding the fate of Iran's Nuclear Enrichment Programme. The resolution must answer the following queries:

1) Does Iran hold the right to develop nuclear technology?

2) Considering Iran's involvement in sponsoring of terrorist groups such as Hizbollah and Hamas, the consequences of the programme should be discussed in detail.

3) Should Iran be allowed to develop this technology, then what should be the conditions for it? Which organizations should be entrusted to monitor the programme and how must this be carried on?

Topic B:  Disarmament of Underage Militants

The present conflicts that revolve around terrorist as well as freedom-fighter groups have caused an alarming rise in the number of child soldiers. There is an even greater concern for the scores of children dying in terrains streaked by landmines. Working in collabration with UNICEF, the commitee must act rapidly to minimize the number of underage militants not only for the cause of international security, but also to save them from casualties. A resolution for this topic must answer the following questions:

1) What kind of terrorist or freedom groups are recruiting the highest number of child soldiers? These organizations should serve as the focal point of the discussion.

2) How must these organizations be dealt with in order to liberate the underage militants?

3) Discuss ways to rehabilitate the massive number of child soldiers.

4) Discuss methods to prevent more children from falling prey to the organizations in question.

5) Find ways to strengthen the cooperation between Disarmament and UNICEF in order to facilitate the liberation and rehabilitation of underage militants.

6) Children are especially vunerable to the effects of conflicts. What measures must be taken to ensure their safety?
