Vote for the Pope

We cannot vote for the new Pope. Only cardinals do. But we can vote for the
Pope to become the "European of the Year". This is because for the second
time, European Voice is organising an awards ceremony entitled "EV50 - the
Europeans of the Year".

Fifty individuals have already been selected in ten different categories.
Among the "European Campaigners of the Year" is Pope John Paul II, "for
championing EU enlargement in his native Poland and for his plea to include
Christian values - without excluding other traditions - in the Convention on
the Future of Europe".

The public can now vote for their choice of "European of the Year" at
www.ev50.com. The deadline for voting is November 15.

---QUEBEC 2002: THE NEXT STEP
 _______________________________________

As agreed last July Bro. William Mann is to form an international committee
of young lasallians to study the propositions of the Quebec symposium
regarding the formation of an International Lasallian youth association.

This stage has already commenced and by the end of November Brother Superior
and the General Council will appoint the Committee, following a nomination
process by all the delegates in the symposium.

We assure Bro. William all our prayers and support for this crucial stage in
the creation of this international committee.

The Gift

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college.

For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's
showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was
all he wanted.

As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father
had purchased the car.

Finally, on the morning of his graduation his father called him into his
private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son,
and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautifully wrapped
gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed the young man opened the box
and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible.

Angrily, he raised his voice at his father and said, "With all your money,
you give me a Bible?" and stormed out of the house, leaving the holy book.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had
a beautiful home and wonderful family, but realized his father was very old,
and thought perhaps he should go to him.

He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make
arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away,
and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home
immediately and take care of things.

When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his
heart. He began to search his father's important papers and saw the still
new Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the
Bible, and began to turn the pages.

As he read those words, a car key dropped from an envelope taped behind the
Bible. It had a tag with the dealer's name, the same dealer who had the
sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and
the words ... PAID IN FULL.

How many times do we miss God's blessings because they are not packaged as
we expected?

tu as, tu me donnes une bible?!"

Imagine John Lennon

Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us
only sky Imagine all the people Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll
join us And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A
brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll
join us And the world will live as one

--- BRO. MIGUEL

Saint Miguel Febres Cordero Beatified 30 October 1977 Canonized 21 October
1984

Francisco Febres Cordero was born into a family that has always been
prominent in Ecuadorian politics. Crippled from birth, he had to overcome
family opposition to realize his vocation to be a lay religious, the first
native of Ecuador to be received into the Institute. Brother Miguel was a
gifted teacher from the start and a diligent student. When he was not quite
twenty years old, he published the first of his many books, a Spanish
grammar that soon became a standard text. In time his research and
publications in the field of literature and linguistics put him in touch
with scholars all over the world and he was granted membership in the
National Academies of Ecuador and Spain. Despite high academic honors,
teaching remained his first priority, especially his classes in religion and
for the young men he prepared for first communion. His students admired his
simplicity, his directness, his concern for them, and the intensity of his
devotion to the Sacred Heart and the Virgin Mary. In 1907 he passed through
New York on his way to Belgium where he had been called to translate texts
into Spanish for the use of the Brothers recently exiled from France.

His health, always delicate, did not easily adjust to the rigors of the
European climate. Transferred to the junior novitiate at Premia del Mar in
Spain, during a revolutionary outbreak in 1909 he supervised a dramatic
evacuation of his young charges to the safety of Barcelona across the bay.
Shortly after they were able to return, he contracted pneumonia and he died
at Premia, leaving behind a remarkable reputation as scholar, teacher, and
saint.

---WORLD MISSION SUNDAY
 _______________________________________

The following are excerpts from the Homily of John Paul II on World Mission
Sunday Sunday 2002

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Mt 28,19).

The Risen Lord took his leave of the Apostles in this way before returning
to the Father, "Go". His last word is an invitation to the mission, that is
at the same time a promise, a testament and a duty. Christ entrusts his
message of salvation to his disciples and asks them to spread it and to
witness to it to the ends of the earth. This is the meaning of today's World
Mission Sunday.

"Behold, I am with you all days even to the end of the world" (Mt 28,20).
This is the promise that Christ made to his disciples as he prepared to
leave the world to return to his Father. I am with you all days! Jesus says,
I am with you, pilgrim Church in the world. I am with you, young ecclesial
communities in missionary lands. Do not be afraid to enter into dialogue
with everyone. Take the message of salvation to everyone. Take courage.
