--- THIS MONTH

February is a very important month for us Maltese because we celebrate the
coming of Christianity to Malta. This is well documented in the Bible in
the Acts of the Apostles and in this edition of the Lasallian youth link
we
would like to share with you the coming of St. Paul to our island. We
encourage you to read chapters 27 and 28 of the Acts so you understand
better how St. Paul arrived in Malta.
February 2003 is also a very important month for the international lasallian
youth movement. Brother William Mann, Vicar General, has finally formed
the
first lasallian youth council. A section of this issue of the Youth link
contains all the details about the memebrs. confirmed
Our heartfelt congratulations to all and we pray for you in the work you
are
about to start.
It is also good to note that Italy although not represented at all in Quebec
also has a member in. The same cannot be said for the REBIM (Britain,
Ireland and Malta) and RELEC (Poland, Hungary, Romania, Germany, Austria,
Slovakia, Holland and Belgium) districts who had representations in Quebec.
We pray that at sometime in the future we may have someone from both these
districts on the council to have a truly democratic and worldwide
representation.

"Once safely on shore, we found out that the island was called Malta. The
islanders showed us an unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed
us
all because it was raining and cold." (Acts 28:1-2 NIV)
Malta!! And so it was that the apostle Paul found himself safely on land
after surviving a terrible storm at sea (Acts 27:13-44) while being taken
as
a prisoner to Rome . The wreck resulted when the Roman army officer ignored
Paul's warning and instead "followed the advice of the pilot and the owner
of the ship." (Acts 27:11 NIV).
Also known as Melita, from the Greek Melite, Malta is located in the The
Mediterranean Sea about 60 miles / 100 kilometers south of Sicily. The
largest of the five islands, Malta, is about 17 miles / 28 kilometers long
and 9 miles (15 kilometers) wide. The bay in which the shipwreck occurred
is
today called "St. Paul's Bay". The other islands are Gozo, Comino,
Comminotto and Filfla.
Originally colonized by the Phoenicians, Malta was held by the Greeks from
about 736 B.C., from whom it was later taken by the Carthaginians in 528
B.C. By 242 B.C., it was conquered by the Romans who governed it, through
a
Roman governor, when Paul was shipwrecked (Acts 28:7).
Paul remained on Malta for three months (Acts 28:11), during which the good
people there treated him with much honor and hospitality (the people of
Malta are still very kind and friendly

. When the time came to continue
the voyage on a ship that had wintered on the island (Acts 28:11), the
people of Malta provided them with all of the supplies that they needed
(Acts 28:10)

John Paul II at World Youth Day 2002: Allow me to consign this hope of
mine

--- ADDRESS TO YOUNG LASALLIANS
______________________________________________________________
The following is an extract from the address given by Gerard Defois,
Archbishop of Reims to Young Lasallians in 1996.
This evening, I think it quite appropriate that, by coming back to the
cradle of the educational work of St. John Baptist De Lsa Salle, you should
discover the spirit of the educator that has inspired vocations of brothers
and teachers in 87 countries of the world. The seed that had been sown has
become an immense tree whose branches spread all over the continents. And
it was on the trunk of that tree that there were grafted the vocations of
those that handed over to you the values of faith at the same time as the
cultures of this you are rightly proud. Indeed this spiritual and moral
treasure has been entrusted to you. Its future, for each generation,
depends on the availability and ability of the young to answer this vocation
of educators.
You have not come here as tourists, but to be attentive to the Spirit who
has raised men of faith and education. God needs you for the Gospel to
speak to the children of tomorrow, the Church needs you so that its
charitable face may continue to welcome those that are excluded from love,
society needs you for our cities to be crossroads of peace and
responsibilities, instead of mortal jungles. The work of St. John Baptist
De La Salle will extend over the present world through you if you can hear
the call of those who in their misery keep hopeful in their brothers in
faith and solidarity.
To educate in trust and love is better than a rewarding profession or a
technical success, it means to believe and prove that for God there is only
one valuable greatness: man restored in his responsibilities, his dignity
and freedom. Is not the fact of giving one's life to build men happy to
live a pledge for the future following Christ? Dear friends, we hand over
the heritage to you; now it is up to you to preserve its life for the years
to come.

--- THOUGHT
______________________________________________________________
Can you give?
A wise woman who was travelling in the mountains found a precious stone
in a
stream. The next day she met another traveller who was hungry, and the wise
woman opened her bag to share her food.
The hungry traveller saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give
it
to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveller left, rejoicing in
his
good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for
a
lifetime. But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the wise
woman.
"I've been thinking," he said, "I know how valuable the stone is, but I
give
it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give
me what you have within you that enabled
you to give me the stone."

I will be with you (Marantha Singers)
I will be with you, in joy and in pain
Your cry for mercy echoes My name
Now and forever I'll be at hand
I will be with you, I will be with you,
For that's who I am.
I will be with you, I'll be on your side
Your prayer for deliverance will not be denied
I'll fight the battles that evil might wage
Oh, I will be with you, I will be with you
Till the end of the age.
I will be with you, I will be with you.
Now and forever I'll be at hand
Oh, I will be with you, I will be with you,
For that's who I am.
I will be with you, there's no need to fear
How can they harm you when I hold you near
Your life is in My life come peril or sword
I will be with you, I will be with you,
Cause I am the Lord.
I will be with you, I will be with you,
Cause I am the Lord.
I will be with you, I'll always be with you
I will be with you, I'm walking beside you
I'm here to guide you
I will be with you, Oh yes I will.
I will be with you, there's no need to fear
Cause I'm there beside you.
I will be with you, I will be with you,
I will be with you, just put your trust in me
I will be with you, always and forever eternally
I will be with you. Oh yes I will
I will be with you.

--- FEATURED WEBSITE AND PRAYER
______________________________________________________________
http://www.keyway.ca/htm2002/prayrequ.htm
An unusual website to come across: it is one where people can actually put
in their prayer intentions so that visitors to the site can pray for them.
The following is a typical prayer which we would like to share with you
and
urge you to pray for this person.
My Dear Friends and Fellow Prayer Warriors:
It is with a very heavy and sad heart that I come to you and ask you to
pray
for our only child, our 14 year old daughter Rosellen. She suffers from
manic depression and severe anxiety disorder. She is obese, and a compulsive
over eater, just like me, her mother. She has also, in the past been
suicidal and a self injurer (one who deliberately hurts themselves.) She
takes medication and is in therapy.
During the past few months she has been getting into a variety of trouble
at
school. She attends a Catholic High School and has been marked. We are very
worried that this path she is on is self destructive and one we soon won't
be able to bring her back from. I have covered her, through prayer, with
the
Precious Blood of Jesus. We have been praying for her diligently.
Today, she was caught skipping music class and smoking in the girls
washroom. She had a boy with her. They are receiving detention and have
been
punished by the vice-principal. She will have to remain in the office for
the next two days.
We have tried everything: grounding her, revoking privileges, etc. She
really is a good kid. She is respectful, kind hearted, sincere, and more.
She is very well liked by most of her teachers and her fellow students all
adore her. We are at a loss. Her 4 credits for this semester are in
jeopardy. Her exams begin next week and she doesn't seem to care.
Please, join us in praying for her. I appreciate and thank you for your
intervention.
In His Holy Name.
Teresa A. D'Agostino

--- AN APPEAL!
______________________________________________________________
It is very important to keep praying for peace in the coming days to avoid
what the Pope termed as the "tragedy of a war". Leaders of some of our
countries have expressed themselves against any war at this stage but there
is still a lot to pray for as some individuals are determined to wage a
war
as soon as possible. The protests held worldwide on 15th February gives
us
hope that there are many people who do not want a war. It is up to us to
persuade our leaders that war should be avoided at all costs.
We kindly ask you to advise of any change in your e-mail address so we
update your records accordingly. Until the next issue we remain
Yours In Lasalle
Ivan , Mark and David.
