May 24, 2001 Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
I saw a Tom Petty concert in Mountain View, CA, last year, but it wasn't so good, 'cause he wasn't the main act; Neil Young was the main act, but this tour "In Concert 2001" was his headliner tour, so I'd expected more.
8:00pm: He and his band entered on the stage. When I saw him, I was surprised 'cause he had a beard, but it was very cool. The opening number was "Runnin' Down A Dream". It was a very exciting song. He sang the song, and then he played a guitar riff; he held up his guitar then played. It was really cool! When they played "Mary Jane's Last Dance" I could smell Mary Jane in the audience. "Here Comes My Girl" which is my favorite song, was the greatest performance. They also played cover songs. The 1st one was "Green Onions" (Booker T. & The MG's), which was an instrumental number, and the other cover song was a blues classics "Little Red Rooster". I thought, this song was the best performance of the night. The piano & the guitar were so wonderful, good combinations of the performance of the band.
They usually play 2 songs with encore, but this night, they played 3 songs. When "Free Fallin'" was finished, Tom said, "Today is Bob Dylan's birthday." And they played "Knockin' On Heaven's Door". I was very glad, but then I thought that this song was the last song. I wanted to hear "American Girl", and they played "American Girl". I was satisfied with this show, but I couldn't hear "Into The Great Wide Open" (I'm a little disappointed!)
