April 25, 2002   Lucinda Williams
I really wanted to see Lucinda Williams, my favorite female artist, and I went to see her "Essence Tour 2001-2002" at the Wiltern Theatre in downtown L.A.
At 8:00 pm, I entered the venue, and by 8:20, the opening act, Anne McCue, from Australia, started the show. Actually, I hadn't heard of her before then, but she was so good; I was amazed at her performance. She played electric, acoustic and 12 string acoustic guitar. When she played Jimi Hendrix's cover song Voodoo Chile, her guitar-playing brought down the house. Her part finished at 9:10.
After that, at 9:40, Lucinda came stage. She and her band's performance was unbelievably great. She played a large number of songs from her over 20 years carrier.
The highlight of her performance was Essence; her vocal along with the cream of the crop band member's playing, especially the lead guitar and organ, were the best sound of the night.
She answered the encore 3 times for the audience. In the 1st encore, she entered alone and played Passionate Kisses, a song written for Mary Chapin Carpenter. And next, all the band members came on stage and played Right in Time, as I expected they would. For the 3rd encore set, Lucinda sang a new song she had written.
The show finished at 11:40. I really got a kick out of her live concert!
