International Students Program |
Objective:
The ISP exist for the primary purpose of looking after the welfare of international students enrolled in the University of the Philippines Manila.
Function:
In its effort to attain its objective the ISP performs the following functions:
- Process study permnits for immigrant and non-immigrant international students;
- Assist international students in their application for admission to the university;
- Plans and implements programs and activities designed to facilitate the adjustment of students to the new environment;
- Serves as a liaison between the international students and the Commission on Immigration and Deportation, Department of Education, Culture and Sports, and ojhter governmbet agencies in matters concerning their stay in the country;
- Coordinates activities designed to enhance cultural communication betrween the international students and the Filipinos;
- Compiles records of international student and conducts appropriate research and follow-up studies.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
A. Graduate Student
- Secure materials and application form from the Office of Graduate School, 3/F, Student Center Building, Padre Faura Street, Ermita Manila, Philippines.
- Submit duly accomplished form to the same office together with the following documents;
- Transcript of records / Scholastic records duly authenticated by the Philippine Embassy/Consulate in the student's country of origin or legal residence;
- Certified true copy of the English Translation of the diploma with the seal of the University and the signature of the registrar in ink, duly authenticated by the Philippine Embassy/Consulate in the student's country of origin or legal residence;
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or its equivalent score of at least 500, if English is not the medium of instruction in the country of origin;
- Affidavit of support / Sponsor of Study;
- Xerox copy of passport pages where name, photo, birthdate and birthplace appear;
- Certified true copy of birth certificate and marriage contract (for married applicant); and,
- Twenty (20) pieces of photographs (passport size) for the requirements of different colleges/units.
B. Undergraduate Student
For Incoming Freshman
Secure materials and application form from the University Registrar, G/F, Bulwagang Joaquin Gonzales (Former NEDA Building), Padre Faura Street, Ermita, Manila, Philippines.
Submit duly accomplished application form to the same office together with the following documents:
- Certification of completion of the high school program/diploma in the student's country of origin or legal residence;
- Certification that he/she passed a college-qualifying national or international foreign-administered examination such as the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) minimum total score of 1200, General Certificate of Education Examination (GCE) 3 ordinary level and 2 advanced level passes and International Baccalaureate Diploma.
- Certified true copy of grades showing a weighted average of B+ (3.25 GPA), 1.5 or 90% or better, in the final education year of secondary education;
- TOEFL (or its equivalent) score of at least 500, if English is not the the medium of instruction in the country of origin;
- Affidavit of support / Sponsor of Study;
- Xerox copy of passport pages where name, photo, birthdate and birthplace appear; and,
- Certified true copy of birth certificate and marriage contract (for married applicant).
An applicant who graduated from a high school abroad may be admitted beginning freshman into a non-quota program without taking the UPCAT; provided, that he/she meets all the above requirements:
For Transfer Student:
A transfer student may be admitted into a non-quota course of the University provided that he/she meets all the
followingrequirements:
- Obtained an average grade of "2", "86%", or better; for all the collegiate academic units he/she has earned outside of the University of the Philippines (UP); provided that the computation of his/her general weighted average shall not include subjects which are vocational in nature, e.i., tailoring, stenography , typing, practical electricity, etc.:
- Completed at least 33 units of academic course in a non-UP college;
- Still has to complete in UP no less than 50% of the units required for the course;
- Submitted requirements as a certified true copy of birth certificate and marriage contract (for married applicant); and, transcript of records / scholastic records from all colleges attended.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR A STUDENT VISA
Upon receipt of letter of admission, the student shall submit the following requirements to the Office of Student Affairs(OSA),UPManila,3/F,Student Center Building , Padre Faura St., Ermita Manila, Philippines, Attention: Coordinator of the International Students Program. These documents shall be handcarried to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) by UP's designated Liaison Officer:
- Six (6) original copies of the 1998 Revised Original Personal History Statement (PHS), duly accomplished and signed by the applicant in English and in his/her national alphabet, accompanied by personal seal, if any, original left and right hand thumbprints and a passport size photograph on plain white background taken not more than six months prior to submission;
- > A notarized Affidavit of Support and proof of adequate financial support to cover expenses for the student's accommodation and subsistence, as well as school dues and other incidental expenses;
- Transcript of records / Scholastic records, duly authenticated by the Philippine Embassy or Consulate in the student's country of origin or legal residence. A "SEEN and NOTED" stamp is not acceptable; and,
- Xerox copy of Passport pages where name, photo, birthdate and birthplace appear.
The DFA endorses the documents to the Philippine Foreign Service Post located in the student's country of origin or legal residence for the issuance of visa. Request of issuance of visa in any other country shall not be honored.
In addition to the documents submitted to the DFA, the student shall submit the following requirements to the Consular Officer at the Philippine Foreign Service Post upon notice of interview:
- Original copy of the Letter of Admission from UP containing a clear impression of the school's dry seal;
- Original copy of the Certificate of Eligibility for Admission issued by the Commission of Higher Education, if enrolled in courses or programs where restrictions may exist due to shortage of facilities, as in Medicine and Dentistry;
- Police Clearance issued by the national police authorities in the student's country of origin or legal residence, authenticated by the Philippine Foreign Service Post having consular jurisdiction over the place; and,
- Medical Health Certificate issued by an authorized physician including standard size chest x-ray; urine & stool examination results, blood examination for venereal and other communicable diseases. (These examinations will be used also by the Bureau of Quarantine for medical clearance pusposes).
NOTE: Schedule of filing: First Semester - April 15 , Second Semester - September 15 and Summer - January 15. Other visas may be accepted except tourist visa.
ARRIVAL IN THE PHILIPPINES
- Inform the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) of your arrival through telephone nos. 525-41-05 /
523-1641 or telefax 526-2274.
- Upon arrival at the Philippine airport, take airport car service from the airport. Proceed to Shalom Center, 1660 Luis Ma. Guerrero St. Malate, Manila, telephone nos. 524-5490; 521-7899; 523-4280 or at Tropicana Apartment Hotel, 1630 Luis Ma. Guerrero St., Malate Manila, telephone nos. 523-8031 to 40. Shalom Center and Tropicana shall serve as temporary accommodations.
- Report to the OSA, 3/F, Bulwagang Joaquin Gonzales (Former NEDA Bldg.), Padre Faura St. Ermita for the scheduling of:
- Registration at the Bureau of Immigration.
- Medical clearance at the Bureau of Quarantine;
NOTE: Student are advised to come (3) three weeks before enrollment period and to bring original documents for verification (e.g. passport, scholarship grant, etc.).
PROCEDURE FOR ENROLLMENT
Step 1. - For incoming undergraduate freshmen and transferees, secure admission slip from the
Registrar's Office.
- For incoming graduate students, secure admission slip from the Office of the College
Secretary (OCS) of your college
Step 2. Secure Study Permit(SP) from OSA.
Step 3. Bring PEP to the UP Health Service at the Philippine General Hospital Ground Floor, Taft Avenue,
for medical examination.
Step 4. Present admission slip, together with the SP and PE results to the OCS for enrollment.
Step 5. Submit SP to the Office of the University Registrar for special assessment and students
with scholarship grant proceed to OSA .
Step 6. Submit photocopy of Form 5 and accomplished information sheet to OSA.
