ANYHOW STORIES
The Anyhow Stories of Lucy Lane Clifford

First published in 1882, the Anyhow Stories of Lucy Lane Clifford were widely reprinted in Cliffords lifetime, but, have over the years fallen into obscurity. Aside from a 1977 reprint edition, and reprints of the stories The New Mother and  Wooden Tony (which have made the round on the anthology circuit) most of the Anyhow Stories havent seen the light of day for almost thirty years. This site hopes to correct that, because lesser know Anyhow stories such as: The Paper Ship, The Imitation Fish, The Story Willie and His Fancy-- along with more the more well know New Mother and Wooden Tony-- deserve to be read and enjoyed through out the generations.

The story entitled The New Mother is probably the standard by which all the other Anyhow Stories are measure. It is the most widely know of the Anyhow Stories; the most frequently reprinted; and for a while, made the rounds on the Internet. The ending of the New Mother even made an appearance in the pages of Grant Morrisons surreal run on the comic book Doom Patrol (in issue 43, fittingly titled Anyhow Stories). Another contender is the story entitled Wooden Tony, an Anyhow Stories not published in the original edition, but later included in reprint editions. Both stories, use the sentimentally (so ill used in some of the other Anyhow stories) to great effect to create a world that is at first safe but gradually becomes more terrifying until the final punch at the end.

(For fun, a list of  "The New Mother" and "Wooden Tony" reprints can be found by clicking

The stories that appear on this site have not been altered in anyway. With the exception of typos, they are taken word for word from the source material I had available.

If you enjoy the Anyhow Stories, or have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Click on the "CONTACT ME" button below and send me an e-mail. I will try to get back to ASAP. (However, if you do e-mail me, please put something in the subject line, like "anyhow stories." E-mails, that leave the subject line blank, I will consider spam, and will go unopened and
unanswered).
