This is a USN C-54 (DC-4) at Williams Field, Antarctica. There I am walking toward the plane. Notice the heater hoses hooked to the engines. While on the ground the engines either need to keep running or have heat applied or the engine oil will freeze and lockup the engines causing major problems.
This is sea ice and shoreline along Antarctica not far from the Ross Ice Shelf taken on a weather recon flight on the above shown C-54.
This is a shot of the Ellsworth Mountain Chain taken during a weather recon flight. Consider that the outside temperature is around minus 90 degrees F. and it is Summer time. The C-54(DC-4) was my favorite plane to fly.
