Complete Configuration of a computer system.
The configuration and necessary hardware for a computer system to participate
as member on a local area network (LAN) is as follows:
SOFTWARE:
The most important software is the Operating System.
Out on the market there are different platforms of OS but the most commonly used are the following:
Windows 98
Windows 2000
Windows NT-4.0
Depending of the type of business would be the software used to create the network and link the existing systems.
For example: at work we use a software called Humming-bird maestro.
This software is designed to interface the different operating system with our
server, which is a UNIX box. This software is needed to make compatible
window based programs and UNIX system files.
IP addresses are to be provided either manually or randomly selected.
IP addresses are identifiers for a computer or device on a TCP/IP network.
The format of an IP address is a 32-bit numeric address written as four numbers
separated by periods. Each number can be zero to 255. For example,
1.160.10.240 could be an IP address.
Manually entered IP addresses are to be provided by the Network administrator.
In difference the random selected IP addresses are accomplished when
servers are set-up up to provide an IP address when a system is boot up.
HARDWARE:
A Network Interface Card (NIC), it could be a 10 or 100 base but it really does
not matter, both would work. The only difference is the speed in which it
can transfer information. 10 would transfer 10-Mbits per second while the
100 would transfer 100-Mbits per second. However, there are other factors
such as network usage, which would affect the speed in which these devices
communicate with other devices located in the network.
