One of my learning objectives for this semester was to become familiar with AutoCAD overlay.

AutoCAD overlay is a software that allows a drafting designer to create a vector file in AutoCAD from a raster file.

Raster file - is a file which is obtained from a scanned picture such as: circuit diagrams, blue prints, hand drawn plans etc.

Vector file - the drawing obtained using AutoCAD software in which you can draw lines, circles, arcs, etc.

At work we mainly translate electrical diagrams, water pump designs, and layouts of piping and wiring.

The main reason for the need of this translations is storage purposes because while the same drawing in

vector file will occupy 100 kb, a raster file will occupy a space close to 5 Mb. (one floppy disk = 1.4 Mb)

The plan is to learn more
