Contemporary Local Area Networks

LANs are one of the most promising developments in today's high-tech communications field. LANs are seen and discussed everywhere: seminars, conferences, and exhibitions, trade magazines, etc. Exactly what constitutes a contemporary LAN is hard to define because no two persons have the same definition.
Although no single definition can present completely a LAN the following are generalized characteristics of a LAN.

· High data rate exchange (typically 1 to 100 Mbps, which today we are looking at 1 Gig-hertz   speed achievement for the new LANs)
· Limited geographical scope (usually spanning up to 1 kilometer)
· Support of full connectivity (all devices should have the potential to communicate with each   other)
· Equal access by all user devices
· Ease of configuration and maintenance
· Good reliability and error free characteristics (almost always true)
· Stability under high load
· Compatibility to the greatest extent possible to a variety of equipment
· Relatively low cost (looking at the sharing of resources)
