         Chapter Three

Dale's group had already bed down for the night.  The next morning Dale's men woke up rather early.  They got up at 5 am and prepared themselves for the long day that was ahead of them.  They left shortly after they had finished their breakfast leaving behind them one receiver to mark the beginning of the day.  They traveled twenty-eight miles when they had come up to the edge of a huge cavern.
This cavern was lit up.  But there were no signs of where the light was coming from.  This was definately strange.  Where was the light coming from?  This was a question that he had to find the answer to.  Before him was a huge city like area.
The structures stretched out for a very long way.  He had no clue as to how far these structures went.  They disappeared far beyond his line of sight.  He couldn't even see the other end of the cavern.   After he had finished gazing upon the structures, he thought that he had better give the general a call on the radio. He informed the general on what he ahd found.  He told the general that the cavern was lit up somehow.  But he wasn't sure of where the light was coming from.  The other thing that he had found was that the cavern was full of these very unusual looking structures with very unusual symbols on them.  He couldn't make out the symbols because he had never seen symbols like these before.
The general told him not to go any farther.  That he was going to send him some more men to help cover this area.  He told Dale that the men would be there in about three or four hours.  Dale told the general that he would wait for the new recruits to get there.  The general asked Dale if he could see any signs of life.  Dale said no.  The general told dale to back up at least one mile and wait.  This way if anything did happen, Dale and his men would be able to get out of there.  Dale said that he would back up.  Before he started to back up, he looked around for a few minutes.  As far as he could see, the structures stretched on and on.  There was no end to them.  He couldn't even see a wall or ceiling.  Yet he knew that there was one somewhere out there.  The structures went way up in the air, stretching out like little fingers.  Some were so high up, that he couldn't see the top of them.  But he still didn't see any movement of any kind.  He told his men to back up veery quietly.  The backed up for one mile and came to a stop.
The general said that he would be there in a few hours.  Because he also wanted to see this for himself.  Dale knew that he had to wait for a long time. Because it took him so long to get to this point.
Dale couldn't resist the temptation of going back into the cavern.  He simply had to see more.  He ordered his men to stay put.  They were outraged.  They saw no reason for him to go back in there without any type of protection.  Dale told them to quiet down and listen.  He tried to convince them that he would be fine, but they still didn't believe him.  They said that he was disobeying orders.  Dale agreed that he was.  But he also reminded them that he was not in the service, that he was just a civilian.  So he didn't have to follow anyone at all if he didn't want to.  They knew that he was right.  But they still didn't want him to go in there.  They watched as Dale walked off in the distance.  His body kept getting smaller and smaller as he walked off.  He looked like he was in the book of Alice in Wonderland.  Dale didn't want to go without the men.  But he also didn't want them to get court marshalled either.  He knew that he was doing the right thing by leaving them behind.
