| Welcome to the Spiny Mouse Checklist |
| Here's a little bit of what you'll need if you descide to get a spiny mouse.. GENERAL: A good cage... (I prefer aquariums for these little guys although wire cages with half an inch by a quarter of an inch bars will work too) NO plastic cages! They'll chew out! Cage Cover (if you get an aquarium) Metal Mesh Covers are prefered. They will chew through plastic. Cage Clips (If aquarium) This is to keep the lid firmly on and the mice inside- they are little escape artists. Water Bottles- Glass prefered unless you can buy a bottle guard. They will chew the bottle within minutes ! Bottle Guard- Meatle prefered, wood or plastic won't do! Food Dish (Something unchewable like metal or hefty ceramics) Bedding (NO Cedar!! Pine should be avioded as well for ANY rodent) Prefered beddings are Sani-chips, CornCob (make sure they don't eat it) CareFresh, Yesterday's News, Aspen Shavings and others. Food- I use lab blocks and a high quaility parrot seed mix. Make sure to look at labels for Lab Blcoks if it has a chemical starting with the letters ETHO then don't buy it. That's a rubber preservative so be wary! Scrub Brush & Spatula- Spatula for cleaning the aquarium and scrub brush to clean the inside of the water bottle spout. Water (if you won't drink your tap then don't make your pets! Buy bottled water if that is the case) Treats- Avoid anything too fatty or sugery. BREEDING EQUIPTMENT A bigger aquarium (20 gallon will do for a pair or small breeding group) High Nutrition Diet (lab blocks, seeds, the odd cricket or bug if you're not to squemish) Nesting Area- They don't really need anything they can give birth in like fancy mice but paper towel tubes and other 'hide outs' are always nice. Extra Cages- You'll need to seperate the boys from the girls after weaning! And you should keep them until they are 6 weeks of age before selling. See my Breeding FAQ. Homes- Well you'll need some one to sell them to! Do NOT sell to a pet store that you don't trust, they could loose their tails or end up with some one who really doesn't know how to care for them or doesn't want them after they grow up. |
