| Before You Get a Spiny Mouse FAQ |
| Male or Female? Male and Female spiny mice are pretty much the same. They don't differ in any personality generalazations and they both have the same health risks and lifespan. Be cautuous when getting a female from a petstore or breeder who has them in mixed gender cages. If the female has reached maturity she may be pregnant but luckily spiney mice only have around 2 pups per litter so it's not that big of a deal. Females can live with other females, males can live with other males, and of course they can both co-habitate with eachother. See my misc FAQ page to see how you can check for male or female. How Many? Unless you are rescuing an older lone mouse who has never been with another cage mate and can't live with another mouse then I highly suggest you get at least pairs if not groups. They can all the the same gender if you don't want any babies. If you do have a lone mouse that just doesn't get allong this is probably due to being taken from it's mother too young and or sold to live by itself for the rest of it's life with out getting those crucial two weeks of socializing after weaning. Where Should I buy Spiny Mice? Of course as with all animals the best place to get spiny mice is off a good reputable and ethical breeder. However we know that spmetimes this just doesn't happen so... If you have to resort to getting them from a petshop be incrediably cautous. Do they all have their tails? Are they all healthy and robust? Are they being properally taken care of? Are the genders seperated? Are the people handling them knowlageable and able to answer questions?
