Minahasa, the hinterlands of Manado, is extremely mountains (Its highest peak stands at 1995 m/6000 ft). The upland hills are covered with clove trees, vanilla, rice fields and other crops. The park covers a total surface area of 89,065 hectares, 97% of which is overlain by sparkling clear, warm tropical water. The remaining 3% of the park is terrestrial, including the five islands of Bunaken, Manado Tua, Mantehage, Nain and Siladen; each has white sandy beaches and coconut trees. Our physician on the ground there, Meggy Tendean, MD, wrote last year that the sicknesses seen in Manado are as follows: Malaria, Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (Demam Berdarah), Tuberculosis (TBC Paru), and Influenza. Orphans International America advises that you get a typhoid shot (Typhium Vi 0.5 ml), take prescription malaria pills (Larium 250 mg � 1 week before & 3 weeks after � 1 pill per week), mosquito spray with 35%+ DEET, mosquito netting for bed, Imodium (over-the-counter), CIPRO 500 mg (prescription for bacterial diarrhea � use if more than 3 days and/or bloody stools), and FLAGYL 500 mg (prescription for parasitical diarrhea if Cipro doesn�t work after 3 days � not to mix with alcohol). In addition we soak all clothing in �Permethrin� to help protect against mosquitoes (good for up to 8 washings), use DEET spray (35%+) between dusk and dawn, sleep in mosquito netting and avoid drinking water, ice, water in the shower, and brush with bottled water. We recommend that we avoid all fruits and vegetables that you do not peel ourselves (example: oranges, bananas). Bring Don�t forget to bring insect spray, clothing for 60 � 90 degree weather (orphanage is on a mountain - chilly at night!), mosquito netting, bathing suit, camera & film, etc. |
