For A Child, Everything.
Thats Why We Let Our Kids Choose Their Own 2nd Name.
Many Indonesian children come to Orphans International with only one name.  Some are fortunate to have two.  None have three the middle name is rare in Indonesia.  To prove an identity and sense of belonging, not only for their childhood, but for adulthood as citizens of the world, we encourage our children to chose an additional name, and we give them a last name if needed the name of the home in which they live.  Thus, if a child comes to us simply as Anuk, we would allow him to chose Leonardo as a middle name and bestow upon him the last name of Roosevelt, if he were living in Roosevelt Island House.  This, his new identity is born.  From the dumps of Jakarta, or the refugee camps of Ambon or Timor, we now have Anuk Leonardo Roosevelt.  Someday, from the depths of poverty, somewhere in the world, it is our hope that this child will walk across the stage and receive a diploma as the president intones, Anuk - Leonardo - Roosevelt.
