I found my first cache of matchcovers when I was an antiques dealer in a small Colorado town outside of Colorado Springs near Pike's Peak. I was at a house to preview an estate and was lead down to a basement and there was a huge basket of matchcovers from the 1930s and 40s, never used, still all the matches in them, as pristine as the day they had been put in the basket. I took them home that night and laid them out on the dining table and was amazed at the variety. Having been an antiques dealer for severeal years, I was familiar about the collecting interests of people who like post cards, stamps and other ephemeral goodies, but had never even considered matches. The next major find was a large collection of 50,000 covers that I bought nearly sight unseen from a fellow in Michigan, and that still forms the basis of my evolving collection today. It introduced me to such a wealth of types that I am still sorting and finding new things all the time. |
