1.) Leelanau County is seeking approval of two millage requests, one to partially fund 9-1-1 operations and the other to fund senior citizens programs run through the county Commission on Aging. How will you vote on each, and why? (75 words maximum)
HEINERT: I believe in the 9-1-1 system, and think it has the potential to save lives in a rural county like Leelanau. County leadership should continue to seriously explore options to cost contain with other County systems in our region. I will support the 2-year renewal. I support maintaining the level of funding available to the CoA before the rollback. I think the new programs envisioned make sense. I will be voting “yes.”
SCHAUB: I support the millage request to fund the 9-1-1 operations. I believe the amount they are asking is a modest amount for an important program.
Commission on Aging is a good program. However, I do not support the increase being requested. They currently have a surplus, therefore, they should not be asking for more money in times when people need lower taxes. Adding two more programs can wait until temporary face lift at home the economy is better.
2.) If elected, what will your top three priorities be as a county commissioner? (50 words)
HEINERT: Engage industry in an inclusive process to develop needed non-municipal public infrastructure. Encourage more affordable living options, enhanced transportation alternatives, and sustainable land use practices and development patterns. Ensure strong bridges to local communities to encourage regional governance as much as reliance on centralized county.
SCHAUB: To identify and respond to the issues that residents face as related to county government. To operate county government more efficiently and effectively, keeping costs to taxpayers down. To improve communication between commissioners and untouchable face mp3 residents.
3,) The county board has fallen north face woman coat sale short of following the rules of the state Open Meetings Act (OMA). What steps would you suggest to assure Leelanau County complies with the OMA in the future? (50 words)
HEINERT: To me it’s simple, follow the rules and the law. They are clear and unambiguous. Take seriously all conflict of interest declarations, and support and institute a videotape recording system to provide a televising of meetings on public access television – channel 2.
SCHAUB: I would make sure workshops on the rules of Open Meetings Act are readily available for the commissioners to attend. Closed meetings should only be used when absolutely necessary.
4.) Should Leelanau County work closer with Grand Traverse County, or beware of developing a deeper relationship because we might lose the autonomy needed to determine our future path? (50 words)
HEINERT: Communication and cooperation with neighboring counties is very important, not only Grand Traverse but Benzie also. Many critical areas transcend geopolitical boundaries such as emergency service, non-municipal public infrastructure and natural systems. Leadership should be strong Leelanau advocates in all regional forums while maintaining autonomy and our vision.
SCHAUB: Working with other counties is beneficial on some programs. However, each proposal would have to be looked at for individual worth.
