Yeah that's me with the sound powered phones on ... I'm at my station, operating the #1 ordnance elevator, located just forward of the island, adjacent to the starboard catapult...

If memory serves me well, we are preparing to unrep ammo and supplies from a ship approaching from aft...

The guy behind me is getting ready to fire a shot-line to the other ship which will initiate the the passing of successively larger lines that will enable the transfer of hundreds of tons of materials necessary to conduct the air war over Vietnam for only another week...

While I'm fitting-out  the rest of this website for it's anticipated shake-down cruise later this spring...

As you read this, the Oriskany lies rusting away, at anchor in the Natches River Channel at the Naval Reserve Fleet Facility near Beaumont Texas...

She was towed to Beaumont during the summer of 1999 from San Francisco around South America via the Straits of Magellan...

The 4 month, 18,000 mile voyage at 6 knots cost in excess of 4.28 million dollars... money that could have gone a long way towards restoring the ship...

There is an ongoing discussion concerned with efforts to save the Oriskany from the scrap yards and preserve her as a nautical museum  at a southeastern port city such as Tampa Bay Florida... To learn more, offer support or just chat, log on to the Oriskany Forum at the BraveNet link below:
