Is the Siberian the Dog for You? Be sure to think long and hard about this question. You can find lots of informative articles about the Siberian on the National Breed club's page. Hopefully, I can give you a little insight here.
The Siberian is a fairly primitive breed, meaning that it has not evolved far from its wild dog origins. Also, it was bred to run as a draft dog. What does this mean to you as a Siberian owner? Well, do you like to have holes in your yard? Or the occasional dead critter on your doorstep? Do you like to run down the road after a rapidly vanishing, yet very happy tail? These are some of the bad things about the breed. Combine that with the twice yearly snowstorm of fur when your poochie blows its coat.....but that's only temporary.... But remember that your Siberian is not being bad...its just doing what comes naturally. Unlike most other breeds, the Siberian was blessed (and their owners cursed) with the ability to practice selective disobedience. They have the ability to weigh the consequences of their actions. On a sled team, this trait can save the lives of their driver and their team. It can cause the pet owner a bit of distress. The bad things about the Siberian all contribute to its survival in its natural environment.
Of course, there are good things about the breed. They are generally healthy and long-lived. Siberians seem to stay young forever! They are friendly, so you don't usually have to worry about your pet biting the mailman or the neighborhood kids. Siberians are sweet and loving, loyal to their families and rarely a "one man dog". You may hear they are not a guard dog, but few intruders will be willing to enter a property patrolled by such an intense looking dog. Plus, most Siberians will raise a fuss of some sort if things are not the way they should be. Your Siberian will never leave you lonely, bored or alone. And you will never wear black again.
