During a frontline visit in the direction of Gruppe Eberbach, the Generalfeldmarschall was caught in enemy fire , his radio vehicle was disabled and he could not be reached by headquarters for the entire day. Hitler sensed treason and alleged capitulation talks with the allies (15 Aug 1944)

In the morning Generalfeldmarschall Model appeared in Paris as the new Commander-in-Chief and had with him Hitlers relief of command letter for von Kluge. Model arrived at von Kluge at La Roche-Guyon close to 20:00 hrs and handed over Hitler's handwritten letter (17 Aug 1944)
Suicide because of knowledge of the 20 Jul 1944 attempt on Hitler. Advised for a long time of the military resistance plans against Hitler via the officers on the staff of Army-Group Centre and acquainted with Goerdeler. On 20 Jul 1944 he undecidedly vaccilates and because Hitler remained alive he decided against the conspitators and sends Hitler a letter of devotion. East of the river Aire and west of Verdun Generalfeldmarschall von Kluge made a midday stop next to the main route between Clermont-en Argonnes and Dombasle. Kluge took cyanide after writing a letter to his brother. Another letter critisising Hitler was given to Sepp Dietrich in the night between 14/15 Aug 1944. Dietrich forwarded the letter to the FHQ (19 Aug 1944)
