"Squirrel Poem"
In this, perhaps her finest work, Hopkins explores the latent sexuality of a repressed population descending from Northern Europeans. Most giant roadside statues were built in the 1960's, when societal pressure to "let it all hang out" eventually forced the Norwegians to find an outlet for their raging sexuality. Indeed, the giant squirrels, loons, oxen and chickens are erections in every sense of the word. Hopkins presents this social oddity us in the fresh, irrevrent dadaist style of her later years. "Squirrel Poem", a frequently anthologized work, is considered a benchmark of the New American Canon.
