Standing in front of the freezer section in a local grocery store, we are trying to decide which flavor to taste next. Suddenly, a voice above us begins to speak...
As we slowly turn our heads toward the distraction, we see a tall, well-dressed young man in a green smock. He has launched into a diliberation on Ben and Jerry's ice cream offering his favorites as options for our choice.
Staring blankly at him, we pitied his pathetic ignorance. We had to understand that he didn't know who he was talking to. Smirks spread across our faces almost in unison. The boy is bewildered.
Erin, seeing the opportunity to flirt, bats her eyelashes and encourages, "What else do you know about Ben and Jerry's?"
"Well, if you have some free time, they have a scoop shop just over the border in Vermont. You are probably within an hour or so right now!"
"You don't say?" Mel's sarcasm drips.
Making our selections, we proceed to the check-out counter. I hang back with the intent to explain to the confused boy, however, I reconsider. "Would you help us carry out our bags?"
"Sure." he answers politely.
Kevin giggles.
As we reach the van (that Mel has now covered with 20 different scoop shop bumperstickers collected along the way), Erin jumps in to start the engine which illuminates the neon 'Vermont or bust!' sign.
As the frightened child timidly backs away from the van, Kevin adds Pennsylvania to the magnetic 'state' map on the side of the van.
We laugh almost wickedly as we climb in and begin again on our journey.
