Hopkins taunts her readers with age-old questions: does smoking ivy cause infections? How could it? Are there perhaps bacterium living on the leaves? Who is Erin, and why would she smoke ivy, when there are so many other luscious plants to smoke? Perhaps Erin, full of questions, represents all of humankind, groping in the dark for answers and getting infections.
