Eriginal Flavor
commentary
Although some believe that this poem is merely based on a clumsy pun, one must stop to consider the fundamental death-ice cream connection to which Hopkins actually refers. The ice-cream eater has no recourse but to scream: in desire for ice cream, and in agony over the cholesterol it leaves in his arteries, which brings him ever closer to death. Additionally, is not eating ice cream similar to orgasm, which has been compared with death by countless philosophers? Yes, scream for ice cream, scream because of ice cream: scream for life, and scream for death.
