Commenatry

In this poem, Hopkins reveals her latent homosexual yearnings. Her strained relationship with her mother, Belle Ann Hopkins, (known as "Red Belle" for her hair color)is discussed early in the poem, and may be a clue as to the origin of Hopkins' sexual deviance. "What the hell are we doing in Atlanta, anyway?" she asks rhetorically. Seeking her mother's reassurance, Hopkins will ask a foolish question. No mother's love is forthcoming, and Hopkins is left alone in Atlanta, cold, lonely, and deviant.
