Why Can You Not Go Out?

An Englishmans' castle is his home,
For outside dragons and demons roam.
Outside chaos, harshness fright,
Inside, order, comfort, might.

Primordial instincts reign supreme,
Dignity and self control, only a dream.
Life makes up its own set of rules,
It tricks and traps the unwary fools.

Fight or flight, your eyes are wide,
No contest, run away and hide.
"Face your fears", you hear them say,
But ran, to run another day.

Bang! What was that? It was only a door.
Fight or flight? I've been here before!
Therapists with breathing exercises,
Cured my hiccups, but fear disguises.

"It all takes time", the Doctors say.
I don't even know which day is today!
"It's a chemical imbalance in your brain",
(Keep taking the tablets to make you sane).

Foetal position in your bed,
Nightmares coursing through your head,
Don't panic, stay calm, control your fear.
I've missed my birthday again this year.

"Pull your socks up", but they're not down,
"Keep on smiling", with a frown!
Tomorrow is another day,
A new set of demons to chase away.
