The Elves of the Trees.
* From the Elven language:
Old SOLARIS, stuck in the sky,
To serve as Watchman as well as a Spy,
On finding Elf Archers excel those above,
In envious spite darkened and whispered to JOVE.
"Great King of the Gods, can you bear to look down
And see your great favourites of old so outdone?
No more will your trophies and victories please,
When eclipsed by the feats of the Elves of the trees."
JOVE rose in a rage and called for GUDAREON,
Entreating that he would an Elven form don
And examine if what he'd heard of was true;
So off to the trees of the forest the God flew;
It happened the arrows were shot for that day
When the archers appeared in their finest array;
Their sport and mirth did his Godship so please,
That he resolved to stay on with the Elves of the trees.
Next morning Old JOVE sent ILLADRIEL out
With fair word to find what GUDAREON was about;
She, swift as an eagle, headlong dashed forth,
To enquire why the God stayed so long upon Earth.
"Oh! I've found, cried GUDAREON, some friends to my mind,
They're gentle, they're courteous, they're social and kind;
They shoot like Us Gods and their songs me so please,
I'll never more quit these fine Elves of the trees."
With the God of the bow and of music so near,
Triumphant our course, for no rival we fear;
With so splendid a model of grace and of art,
Emulation alone do we need on our part;
Now let us avoid vain squabbles and strife,
And reside with these folk and partake of their life;
And hoary Old JOVE feel aglow when he sees,
His Children enrolled midst the 'Elves of the Trees'.
