San Salvador
Dreaming
Documentary synopsis
San Salvador Dreaming is an inspirational story of love,
courage and sacrifice of four generations of women as they each confront
and survive the traumas of the civil war and poverty.
During the 100 years of oppression they never lost sight
of their dreams, or gave up the struggle for a better life for their
children. Live lived in freedom.
Doris Ayala, the youngest in this family fulfilled her dream
and the dreams of the Ayala women when she graduated form Adelaide University
with a Bachelor of Education, Art/design in 1997.
Her mother, Dora Alicia's life long struggle to keep her
family together and safe has been realised. It appeared her family had
overcome and triumphed against all odds
In the late July 2002 Doris began teaching English at a
school in Palambang, Indonesia. Which in circumstances beyond their
control finds the Ayala family now living in three different continents.
On the 12th of October 2002, terrorist bombs devastated the Bali
Sari nightclub and ripped at the hearts and minds of two nations of
peaceful people everywhere.
Will Doris remain in Indonesia? Is it safe? Will she help build
a bridge of understanding, tolerance and acceptance between Australian
and Indonesians?
This documentary will take us into the Indonesian town of Palambang
and the school where Doris is teaching. During the making of the documentary
Doris will return to El Salvador, taking the audience into the poverty
stricken town where she learnt to read and write from her great grandmother,
Rosita-whom she grew up believing was her mother.
Rosita died in '99, just before Doris graduated.
