Does anybody around here feel sick and tired of Windows' defacto editor -- Worpad/Notepad?
Or is it just me feeling that way? Well, I know Notepad isn't the king of all editors, but
it does get some pretty simple work done. That is all to it. But I wanted more, I wanted
specific syntax highlighting for certain languages without sacrificing the lightweight
feel of Notepad. I know there are tons of IDEs out there that'd make me happy, but they're
usually huge and heavy and are probably memory animals. Features like undo and redo is also
what i'm looking for, and hopefully the editor could integrate some external compilers for easy
development. I didn't actually start out on the Net to look for an editor, but while I was
just perusing some of my favourite sites I bumped upon the enigmatic Vi (pronounced vee-eye) editor.
For those who have crossed over to or has always been in the GNU/Linux world, this is a no
surprise application. In fact, I myself have been using it for some time when I first
crossed over to Linux. I love that editor the most, with so much features in it I could
hardly use them all. The learning curve is almost equivalent to f(x) = n, where n is
any real number, meaning that it's super easy to use. It didn't occur to me before that
there was a port for Win32, but soon after I headed to vim.org
to find out more about the port and download it. In less than five minutes I finished installing
Vim on my system and was feeling like I was back home again. In truth, I was feeling a little
stupid for not knowing that there was a port for Windows all the while. I could've found out
much earlier. But I'm glad that I did now. The Win32 port still retains the most part of the
original GNU version of Vim and it works fast and has all the stuffs that I want. I couldn't be
happier.
If you've never used Vim before, I highly recommend it, a nd before you know it, you'll
be using more Vi than the stupid, zero-feature sillyware Windows notepad.
