The groups first den build was wooden and build about 50 years ago. A short while after it was built, it was burnt down. The group had to fundraise to build a new den, which this time would be built of bricks. This den is the one still standing today on the Orewa Beachfront. Orewa Sea Scout group has suffered a big slump in numbers in previous years. But in the last three, numbers have built up in all three sections. Keas having about 20 boys, the Cubs with about 30 boys and the Scouts with about 25 boys. The group is running well with a number of enthusiastic leaders and committee of about 7 people. For the past couple of years Orewa Sea Scouts have held the Sea & Air Day on the beach. The beach would become a temporary runway for a number of Cessnea Planes from the North Shore Aero Club would land and take people for rides. Other activities included were Thunder Cat rides, mini bikes, static show etc. We have held this day 2 times with the help of Redvale Lime. So the Orewa Sea Scouts are still going strong into the new millenium. |
