| Some Bullying Statistics - In a poll done by the National institute for Child Health and Human development, one third of students admitted to being involved with bullying actions, 13% a bullies, 11% as victums, and 6% in both roles. - Bullying is much more intensive between the ages of 11-14, the most sensitive years of a child's lifetime - Although only 25% of students say that teachers intervene in bullying situations, 71% of teachers say that they always intervene in these situations -Bullying episodes are usually very brief, lasting only 37 seconds. (Gun Analogy) -Bullying occurs in schools once every 7 minutes. - About 60% of boys identified as bullies in middle school commit one crime by the time they are 24 yrs old. |

| Myths associated with Bullying -"Sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me"- Name calling can hurt wors than hitting, and can lead to severe low self-esteem, leaving the victum prone to depression, suicide and, other anxiety disorders. - "Large, urban scools are condusive to bullying"- There is no correlation that has been established between bullying and class or school sise. In fact, there is some evidence that bullying is less prevalent in large schools because victums have increased oppurtunities to find supprtive friends. - "Bullies suffer from insecurities and low self-esteem. They pick on others to make themselvesfeel powerful and important"- Most bullies have average or above average self esteem. They "suffer" from aggressive temperments, a lack of empathy, and poor parenting. "Some people deserve to be bullied"- Just because someone is different does not give anyone the right to make him/her miserable. Everyone has the right to be unique |

| Myths continued... -"Bullying is just harmless fun"- Having fun at the expense of hurting or intimidateing someone else is always a very cruel action. - "If you complain about a bully, you are tattling or "acting babyish""- When a child is being bullied, it is a smart idea to tell an asult, fighting back will only escalate the situation. - "Bullying is a normal part of growing up" - If we believe that mistreating some one is normal, we a less likely to take actions to take preventive action. Under no circumstances is any type of abuse "normal". - "Bullies just want attention. Ignore them and they will stop"- Bullies are looking for control, and rarely stop if their behavior is ignored, and will increase if not addressed by an adult. - "You'll get over it"- While some people do, many never do and not only will incidents of bullying will be remebered , contineued aaction can lead to severe emotional problems later in life. |
