BOOKSHELF
(These are just some of my favorite books, and ones I'm currently reading...I'll tell you what's what next to each one)
Catch-22 - Joseph Heller
A favorite book of mine- a laugh-out-loud satire. It's about a guy in WWII who's angry that thousands of people he hasn't even met keep trying to kill him. The characters are classic, including a soldier who's in love with a prostitute that hates him and a general named "Scheisskopf" (ask a German what that means). It gets a little sad and dull in the middle, but the end picks up speed again.
High Fidelity - Nick Hornby
Another favorite of mine. This one's about a guy who owns a record store and looks back at five of his previous relationships to try to figure out why they never last. A very funny and interesting look at the male mind.
Fight Club - Chuck Palahniuk
An awesome, testosterone-driven novel. It's about a young man who takes out his anger at the world in an after-hours fight club, held in the basement of a bar. Good twist at the end (unfortunately, it was ruined for me, but it was still good). Lots of cussing and nasty stuff, so it's not for everyone. However, I loved it.
Bridget Jones's Diary - Helen Fielding
A fun and quick read, but probably only rewarding to other girls (especially those that aren't too prude). It's about a woman who deals with smoking, drinking, being slightly overweight, and coping with jerk guys. She's looking for a fairytale romance, and finds it in the most unlikely of men. Quite amusing.
The Joy Luck Club - Amy Tan
I read this for English sophomore year, and I loved it. It's about four Asian women (Chinese? I don't remember) and their mothers. It delves into relationships with family and men, and leaves no character two-dimensional. Wonderful symbolism is woven into the novel, too.
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
SO ROMANTIC!!! Guys typically hate this book, but ladies, if you're willing to put up with the difficult language, you'll probably love it. It came out of the era of gothic novels, so naturally, it has love, it has suspense, it has anger, it has tears...and it has a wonderful ending. Sometimes I just read certain parts over to get my romantic fix (shut up, I know I'm lonely).
Tuesdays with Morrie - Mitch Albom
Amazingly, it's a true story about a student who goes to visit his dying professor...and gets a lesson in how to live. Ooh, I sounded so dramatic! But seriously, it's a helpful and easy read- it really makes you take a look at yourself and your values. It's life-changing, if you're willing to let it be- I read it twice!
The Jesus I Never Knew - Philip Yancey
I started reading this a while go, but put it down for a bit. It's really a good book, though. It puts Jesus into a whole new perspective. It makes him three dimensional, which is something I personally don't get out of the Gospels unless I really dig deep. Thankfully, Yancey does the work for me. It's probably best for Christians who've grown up in the church and found Christ getting "old", so to speak. However, new Christians will like it, too.
Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire - Jim Cymbala
This is the book I'm currently reading. It's wonderful! It shows just how powerful prayer is, and it gives you a new passion for it. I no longer do my "nightly prayers"; rather, I pray throughout the day, and sometimes I even drop to my knees and just go at it for a good twenty minutes (and only praying for one thing). Now, I'm witnessing how effective it is- I've seen some pretty crazy things come after praying since starting this book. It really builds your faith up.
The Ragamuffin Gospel - Brennan Manning
I read this about a month ago, in the middle of my 40-day faith drought. It's all about God's love and mercy. There's really not much else to say on the book except what I just said. It's a great read for anyone who questions God's love for him or her.
