THREE STATE BATTLE AT PURCELL

Race fans packed into the bleachers along with temps in the 70’s greeted the riders at Round #5 of the AMP Outlaw Winter Nationals, held in Purcell, Oklahoma, Saturday Jan 7. Open Pro Singles riders from three states competed including Kent Briggs and Aaron Lindfors down from Kansas, Logan Sherb, Clayton and Travis Hull from Weatherford, Texas, and the Oklahoma posse of Joe Duvall, Jeff Bostic, Bret Sowders and Chance Osborn. Among the dignitaries of dirt in Purcell were Dirt Motorsports Shane Carson, and GNC #18 Terry Poovey.

Indoor champs Joe Duvall and Clayton Hull squared off for the Main Event in the Open Pro Singles, but not without a major challenge from #63g Jeff Bostic aboard the John Calvert prepared Yamaha. Joe Duvall, riding a brand new Honda prepared by AMA GNC Crew Chief Garry Baheler out of Performance Vehicle Services in Tulsa and sporting a Chuck Butler built engine, led the race from green to checkered. Kent Briggs out of Manhatten, Kansas finished second on a Honda prepared by Terry Poovey. Briggs took over second spot, following a bobble by Bostic on lap 8 of the 10-lap-main event. Clayton Hull rounded out the top three. Hull rode a Rotax powered motorcycle, sponsored by BH Racing and Gilbert Porting Service.

125/250 & Open A class points leader Justin Elswick aboard the PPR, Dayco, Dopps Racing, K&N Motorcycles, Daley's Speed Shop Honda, experienced mechanical problems with a throttle cable following some bar banging in a qualifying heat race. Elswick was able to repair the damage and finished second to Anthony Varano in the Open A class. PWA & B points leader Hope Robinson also experienced problems ending her winning streak, Hunter Watson out of Pottsboro, Texas won the PWA, B and the 65 class.

Brad Rodgers commanded the 12" Lites Xtreme Class aboard a Kawasaki out of the Cycle One camp. Rodgers, defeated 24 riders in the Xtreme class and won the Mad Dog class to take the honors and the cash. Frank Bardaro riding the Mike Kidd Triumph once again defeated all comers in the Vintage Twin class.

Roy Hinkle rode a perfect race in the Vintage Pro 600 class, defeating last season’s champion Kevin Ellingswoth. The track was a cushion sandy combination, however a Road Grader has been ordered to remove the top layer of loose sandy loam for the next round in Purcell. Race fans got a full night of racing. The next round of competition in Purcell is slated for Sat Feb 11, 2006.
