THE BIG FREEZE
Enough Ice to make a Kazillion Slushies, all that was needed was flavoring and cups.
Mother Nature has not been kind to us in Oklahoma this race season. Got to hand it to our great crew of volunteers and the staff members. They have gotten used to some of the worst weather conditions available and have kept their sights on the job to be done. Did not hear one complaint out of any of the volunteers, crew or workers this weekend regarding the weather conditions. They all did an outstanding job and all the racers and fans gave the crew a checkered flag salute with their applause. We all appreciate your hard work and dedication.
The weather did not seem to slow down the race teams that have their eyes set on the High Points Championship for the Indoor Series. Just above freezing temperatures, an ice-covered parking lot with a Winter Storm warning in the area did not stop the racing action slated for indoors at the OK Corral Saturday night Jan 20. Race teams in all four divisions arrived to do battle for the fourth round of competition in the series. Indoors the racetrack was dry earlier in the day, water had to be applied for the night’s racing. Fred Mears worked the dirt and made for a super fast surface that held up to all the horsepower the race teams threw at it all night.
New comer to the series, Quad Racer Dalton Click displayed his skills in two classes winning the Blaster class and placing a respective 3rd in the 250 A class. Arkansas based Kenny Castle drove over with the family to take home gold in every division they entered. Kenny won the big race of the night in the Open Pro Quads taking the majority of the purse back to Arkansas.
Returning rider Denny Sowders strapped on the Steel Shoe to blast around the Indoor at Harrah once again. Disguised as Bret Sowders sporting the 81g number plate, Denny finished 2nd in the Open Pro Singles race. Bret was snowed and iced in at college up in Wetherford. Denny had a giant smile on his face when he came in the office following hot laps. I believe that Motorcycle racing is one of the best endorphin release activities of all times. It is also good for the soul.
Newalla resident Tristian Keith continued his winning ways taking home 4 1st place trophies in as many events he contested. Defending 2006 champion Justin Elswick came prepared with a new jug of high test fuel that he used to best his competition in both the 125/250 and the Open A divisions. Always a pleasure to see the Tulsa based Ellingsworth family at the track. Sebastian Ellingswhorth, the youngest member got his first 1st Place Gold for the 2007 season. Believe he had as much fun playing with the seven-towed cat that rests under the potbelly stove keeping warm as he did racing.
Sebastian's dad Kevin took home the Vintage Pro 600 honors in a hard fought battle with track builder Fred Mears and Scott Koonce who was shaking down his new steed for the first time out. Scott looked great in early practice after Fred Mears had conditioned the track with the box blade creating a semi cush, which turned into a super tacky track later in the evening.
Karts saw a new winner in the Beginner class as defending champion Leghiton Clift fell ill early on following his practice session. Bailee his older sister returned to win her class. Run What Ya Brung Karter Shane McDonald got lucky at intermission winning the 50/50 Jackpot.
There were 11 New racers added to the series Saturday Night and we had 14 racers that won the first time in their classes.
Classes with (NW) designate a new winner in that class for the series.
