Central to Yellowstone vacation traffic are the geyser basins: upper, middle and lower. This is a semi-bird's eye view of part of the lower basin, where Old Faithful is located. And for those who don't know, the area that Yellowstone occupies is a huge volcano that erupts every half a million years or so, and is due to erupt any day now.
This is Bill's favorite picture. These hot springs, of which there were many of varied sizes, shapes and shades, get their colors from the different organisms that live in them, based on the varying temperature of the water. They often bubble, which either indicates boiling temperatures or sulphur gas escaping.
This is Chimney Geyser. A familiar sound in the geyser basins is the bubbing and churning of many geysers. All of this geyser activity is associated with the release of sulphur gases, creating an atmosphere in which you can fart and no one will even notice! And some people will stand in these clouds of sulphur mist and not even flinch!?!
Ahh... Old Faithful. All of these geysers, springs, mud pots, fumaroles, vents, etc. are connected by a number of underground channels, creating a sensitive relationship. One nearby geyser was formed a half century ago by an attempt to create a water pipe, which was subsequently abandoned, but the geyser remains!
