Succulents |

Succulents and cactus are of the same plant family. Even though some succulents have forms like a perfectly shaped rosette to a thorny exterior. And, Carolus Linnaeus, creator of the naming system of plants, animals, and other living organisms, chose the Greek word kaktos, meaning thistle, to name the family we now call cactus. All of the succulents that you see here have been generously given to us by Mr. Abelardo and Norma De La Cruz and family in Alameda, Ca. Thank you for the wonderful collection. |

As you can see, succulents come in a wide variety of color and shapes. The rosette shaped succulents (1st and 3rd in the picture from the left) are known as Aeoniums. After flowering, these rosettes and sometimes the entire plant will die. These all start to grow in the autumn season. They tolerate dry cold conditions down to 40 degrees F. The first rosette succulent is: Aeonium arboreum 'Schwartzkof' and is so dark purple in color that it seems black. The next rosette in the pic is: Aeonium arboreum 'Atropurpureum', which changes color with the leaves depending on the season. Check back soon as we will add more and clearer pictures of these great plants! |
