Pollination of Dendrobium White Bota
Now you can really see the sweat on my forehead.  This is after pollinating several of the orchids, which is done as not all flowers will accept the pollen.  Then I collect some of the unused pollen and store it for future breeding projects.

These orchids were pollinated in Novermber 2003.
And here we are as of January 2004.  This was the only seed pod that formed from the Dendrobium White Bota.  Within a couple of months, and before the pod splits open, I will harvest the pod and create baby orchids using micro culture.  Orchids are unlike other angiosperms, ie. flowering plants, in many ways.  One of which is that orchid seeds cannot be placed into the soil and grown.  They have a symbiotic relationship with a certain fungi that helps make the seeds grow.  And the seeds are really not seeds, they are miniature plant cells.  So, in order for me to grow these orchids, I'll grow them in an agar solution where they will form protocorms, the first cells of the orchid plant.

Be sure to come back and see how far we have progressed with this pollination project!
