WEBSITE LINKS
Here are some of the Websites I frequently use.
For Orchids:
Orchid Enterprise, Inc.
An excellent grower, Orchid Enterprise provide a wonderful select group of orchids.
Specializing in, but not limited to, South American orchids; they are one of the most
knowledgable sources about the Catasetums and thier relatives. I often have the pleasure
of working with them at orchids shows; and when I can't be there they often carry some of
my photographs. At shows, they broaden their selection of orchids by carrying many orchids
from Al's Orchid Greenhouse.
Al's Orchid Greenhouse
Another wonderful grower! Visiting Al's greenhouse is a treat all by itself. He grows a
fairly wide selection of orchids, and also works with Orchid Enterprise, carrying many of
their in-bloom plants. I'm happy to say, they also carry my Orchid Calendar!
Quarter Acre Orchids
Another great source for orchids, they also carry possibly the largest range of orchids
supplies in the Washington D.C. area. (They ship also!) Their store in Alexandria carries
my notecards, as well as both framed and matted prints. This is the best place to find
my photographs already framed. And, if your looking for an orchid as a gift, drop by the
store and you're sure to find a beautiful plant in bloom, and grab a notecard to go with it.
One stop shopping, who can ask for more?
Ecuagenera
Based in Ecuador, they have the widest range of orchids I have ever seen. Would you believe
over 180 Genera in their species alone? They also do a lot of their own hybridizing. And
if you haven't seen enough orchids looking through their Website, sign up to go on one of
their tours in Ecuador. I went in 2006, had a wonderful time, saw more orchids in situ than
I could have imagined, and traveled through a gorgeous country. Highly recommended!
For Art:
Dream a Little Garden
At Dream a Little Garden Jennifer Anderson makes some of the loveliest miniatures you will ever
see. Every piece is a one-of-a-kind gem. The specialty is, of course, miniature orchids; all
based on specific orchid species or hybrids, not just generic orchid looking miniatures.
But she also places them in lovely settings, complete with unique furniture, magazines and
books, flooring, and probably even a small libation. Imagine a quiet, airy gazebo planted with
orchids and ferns, and a nice Bordeaux at hand where you can rest and relax and the end of
a trying day. Or the fun of a rustic potting shed, with the reading nook in the corner (and
maybe a cold beer when the job is done). Jennifer creates places that we go to in our dreams!
Places to Visit:
For a real vacation you can start with Ecuagenera
above.
Brookside Gardens
A beautiful park located North of Washington D.C. (about 4 miles north of DC's beltway) in
Wheaton, MD. This is a 50-acre manicured garden with conservatories, visitors center, and
gift shop. Admission is normally free, but at Christmas they have a walk-thru light display
(Garden of Lights)that
they charge for, and their Summer butterfly show (Wings of Fancy)
has a small entrance fee. It abuts the more rustic Wheaton
Regional Park, with its hiking trails, nature center, horseback riding, ice skating,
carousel, and miniature train ride.
Longwood Gardens
A 1,000+ acre estate, once belonging to Pierre S. du Pont, Longwood Gardens offers just
about anything you could want. The 2 fountain displays are sights to behold, and don't
miss the orchid room in the conservatory. And the light display at Christmas is second to
none (and don't miss the small fountain playing to Christmas music).
