Don't Sacrifice the Innocent |
Our nation is deep within a crisis unlike any we have ever known. We have suffered the horror of attack on our own soil, undergone the anguish of losing loved ones, raged at the persons responsible for this maliciousness, and steeled our resolve to carry on. All of this has happened within a very short space of time. While we go forth to battle the forces of terrorism that threaten our nation, we must remember what it is to be American. |

Americans have a capacity for understanding and tolerance that can be found in few other places on the globe. We come from divergent backgrounds and wear different faces, but, together, we stand united, strong and proud. We are ready, willing and able to fight, shoulder to shoulder, to defend our land from any assault. |

Americans value life, and its many liberties, that are represented in our constitution. As we seek to hold those who perpetrated this act accountable, we must not harm those who are innocently caught in the crossfire. America has striven to right wrongs throughout our world for as long as we have been a country. We have aided innocents countless times before, and we should not dismiss them now. |

America cannot reciprocate this terrorist warfare with some of our own. We know the pain that comes from losing thousands of innocent lives, and to commit that same act against another nation would be in opposition to everything America stands for. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are not just words that are valued by Americans. They are truths that exist in all nations and with all peoples. It is a crucial part of our society to appreciate these rights. In our desire to bring to justice those criminals liable for this heinous offense, let us not forget what it is to be American. |
