Anything cool going on?
Always. Right now ORCarve is planning its second annual major club ride, the ORCarve Big Dig II. We will be meeting at Mt. Bachelor on April 4-6, 2003 (that's Thursday, Friday, and Saturday) for a few days of alpine madness. The Tahoe Carvers and ORCarve are proud to sponsor this event, which is open to anyone - alpine, softies, skier or snowblader - who wants to lay down some arcs with fellow riders. This event coincides with the Far West Ski Association National race championships, so there should be quite the turn out. Let's show them what the NW has been hiding!
For club members we are working out a demo plan. Last year we managed to bring out some Donek Snowboards and Catek bindings, and this year we hope to be showcasing these manufacturers and more!
Let me stress this is open to EVERYONE so even if you are not part of ORCarve (the bestest, balls out, most bitchin grass-roots carving club ever) or the Tahoe Carvers (not too bad, either) then you are still invited, and damn it, we are expecting you to show!
Meeting place & time: 9 a.m. at the ticket booth every day.
Registration: Not required but requested, as it helps us make a case to manufacturers as to why they should send out some demo gear. Fill out our online form and let us know you're planning to attend.
FRS channel: Set your walkie-talkies to 5/12, and tune in to Radio Carve.
Lodging options:The Riverhouse has a special for the Far West Ski Association National Championships, so just tell them you're in town for that and request the special rate. Or, if you're a real carver (i.e., broke), try the Bend Cascade Hostel, which is located fairly close to the Riverhouse, and on the way to the mountain. No Web site, but you can reach them by phone at (541) 389-3813.
Past events
The "Oughtta be Annual Easter Sunday Ride" was held on Sunday, March 31 2002. That's right, Easter Sunday - we've found that this tends to be a really uncrowded day on the mountain for some reason or other. The ride was at Mt. Hood Meadows; the slopes were as empty as you could have wished for, but somehow carvers in attendence were kind of few. Carvers go to church? Praying for more snow, no doubt...
The Big Dig was held at Mt. Hood Meadows on March 9 and 10, 2002. We had a great time riding with people from all over the Northwest - we'd like to especially thank the guys that made the trek from the Seattle and Mt. Baker areas. We took advantage of good carving conditions on the ninth to lay down some deep tracks, then on the tenth it snowed hard, and most of us switched to soft setups and enjoyed some great powder runs. All in all, it was a good weekend of riding with some great folks.
| Here's our intrepid club president Eric with the demo boards that Donek loaned us for the Big Dig weekend. The funky board on the left is Eric's personal Incline, the two red boards and the blue board are Donek Freecarves, and the American flag boards are Donek Axis boards - new this season. For more information on Donek boards, see their Web site. We'd also like to thank Catek for sending out demo bindings for the weekend - click here for more information on their very rugged products. |
