Lesson Six:  The sz diphthong

What’s a diphthong?  Just two letters together that produce a single sound.

Remember the words szija…szerbusz, szivesen?  They begin with Sz, but are pronounced just like the s in the word sun! Ignore the z (in this case) and you’ll be fine. (The s alone is pronounced as sh as in shoe).

This is a very common diphthong in Hungarian.  Get used to it!

Some words with sz:

1. Szombat- (sohm-butt) Saturday

       (long o as in tone)

2. Szék-(sayk) chair

3. Szép-(sape) pretty

4. Sziv-(seeve) heart

5. Szo-(so)  word

6. Busz-(boos) bus

7. Asztal-(uh’ stall) table
