ADDITIONAL NOTE:: Suffrona PATTON and her family lived in Union Co, Ga, Fannin Co, Ga., Polk Co, Tn and Lumpkin Co.Ga. They worked in the mines. I believe she met and married a member of the Stepp family while living in Polk co.TN.( or possibly in Fannin Co while visiting sister Lydia who married a Rider from Fannin co.), , then moved to Lumpkin co, Ga.before or after she became a widow. The son James Stepp listed in the 1880 census may have been a stepson.

The Patton family came from the area around Buncombe Co, NC. traced back to abt.1805. By 1850, they were living in Union Co, Ga. listed in the 1850 census, household # 81, as follows:

By 1870 they are all gone from Polk Co except for Suffrona's sister Lydia Patton who married James Rider from Fannin Co, Ga. She and her family are listed in the 1870 census. Later, she and her family are found in Pickens County, Ga. with a lot of other Riders. ( this happens to be the same area where Mary Catherine Stepp's husband James Jacob S. Jones was born and grew up.)
By 1880, Lydia is living near sister Suffrona ( Patton) Stepp in Dahlonega, Lumpkin Co, Ga. with her 2nd husband W. Abbercrombie.

It's possible that Suffrona (Patton) Stepp also died young and that a family named
Rider finished raising her daughters Mary Catherine & Adaline and a family named Patton raised her youngest son William.This story was handed down and told by an elderly family member.
I have a copy of a delayed birth certificate from one of Mary Catherine ( Stepp) Jones sons that lists Mary's middle name as Ann. There is a possibility that she had 2 middle names also, as was common in those days.
