Which
Oracle server to choose(for NT or Unix)?
I am looking to install an
oracle server on eithet a Nt or Unix server. Running PTC Intralink. Looking
for answers to what is the best operating system to install it on.
Ans1:
Installation script for the
Linux-version assumes quite a lot and if
those assumptions are not
right, it means a lot of work.
(And if you haven't installed
Oracle on Linux before, you'll
spend most of the time reading
manuals)
Installation is not that hard
on other unix-platforms, as installation
scripts have had a lot of
more time to evolve.
Linux has a significant advantage
: you could try it without cost.
If it doesn't attract, then
you could buy NT and license for Oracle.
The opposite is not possible
as you can't get a trial/free -version of
NT.
Our company did and now they
are changing all PC-Oracle-servers to
Linux-boxes ....
Ans2:
Yep, if you actually _read_
the documentation and have a clue of UNIX/Linux
it isn't harder than on NT,
two weeks is ridiculous, it takes me usually
about 1-2 hours on Slowlartis/Linux,
a little more on FreeBSD because i have
to configure the linux emulation.
Ans3:
The problem here is the word
"best". What is your criteria, and your
environment?
If cost/performace ratio is
important, Linux is the go.
If supportability is important
then if your site already
has a lot of unix experience
then
your most popular unix is best
else
if your site already has a lot of NT experience
then NT is the go
else learn Solaris and go that way

fi
else if easy install is important
then
hire a Oracle person to install it on some platform

Ans4:
I don't know much about the
Unix installations, but I installed oracle
8.0.5 on a NT Server and it
was as simple as say install a word-processor.
A friend of mine installed
same oracle on a linux server and it took him
more than two weeks to do
so...
