This page is mainly dedicated to the people who are interested in the role playing game on Dalnet.irc. Here is where you will find BioSheets and explanations of how to fill out the BioSheets, as well as information on the background storyline, combat system, characters currently being played in the RPG and those that are still available, as well as miscellaneous links and information that you may find interesting.
If you are not yet a member and wish to become one, look over the information posted here and come chat with Oracle_of_Zion<Agent_Jones> or Agent`Smith in #The_Matrix_RPG channel on Dalnet.irc. If you are unfamiliar with Internet Relay Chat, then click here a link to the mIRC webpage. You can also go here to check out the Dalnet.irc website for information on how you can connect with us.
For those of you who just wandered in here looking for information on the movie, we hope you find some interesting tidbits as you pass through, especially as time goes by and the webpage is continuously updated.
The rules
for
entrance
in
The
Matrix
FFRPG
will be posted here.
1. Check out Who's Who here or on the message board and view the character list.
If you wish to play a character that is a part of the movie series you need to
see this list so that you know who is available and who is not. Take this time
as well to familiarize yourself with the rules of the RPG and to understand the
world in which the characters live. Also, check out the message board under
Submitting A Character for a BioSheet to copy and paste to a text file. TEXT
files are all that will be accept is so DO NOT add it to word or change the form
of the character sheet. Files with *.doc or *.rtf extensions will not be
accepted.
2. Speak with Oracle_of_Zion/Agent_Jones or Agent`Smith in the channel on dalnet #The_Matrix_RPG. We will assist you with character generation. Ask for a character sheet and fill it out.
3. If you wish to create a homemade character from scratch, they are also quite welcome in the RPG. You will need to still browse the webpage and Message Board for the rules of the channel and to familiarize yourself with the world(s) that the characters dwell in. This webpage also has information on skills and items that your character may wish to possess, so it can help you write up your character.
4. Turn in your finished BioSheet. Try to rename the character sheet to include your characters name on it for organizational purposes. It should be in the format of TMRPG_BioSheet_Blank.txt where Blank=your character's name. The sheet must be approved by Oracle_of_Zion/Agent Jones or Agent`Smith for the character to participate in any RP.
5. Wait for the Matrix to pinpoint your character. Er, for us to approve your character. Usually this only takes a couple minutes for me to browse over them and ensure your character will fit into the RPG and is not over-powerful in the beginning. We will work with you to make your character compatible.
6. It's BULLET TIME!! You're finished and are now officially a part of The Matrix.
7. If you wish to run more than one character, at
this time it is limited to two or three characters. If there are any questions
about the act of submitting a character, you may
voice them here by e-mailing me or in the "Questions?" or "Suggestion Box"
forums on
our Message Board.

This section should help people understand the meanings and assist in character generation. The Bio Sheet is designed to let GMs and players alike compare the strengths and weaknesses of a given character, so that the consequences of their actions will unfold based on standards that everyone abides by. Below, each item contained on the sheet will be explained piece by piece. If you need any further explanations, please feel free to ask Agent_Jones or Agent`Smith to assist you.
The Matrix RPG Bio Sheet
Instructions: Fill out this sheet the best you can and turn it in to Oracle_of_Zion.
1. Player's Name or Nick online : <your nickname on mIRC>
2. Player's Email address : <email addy we can send messages to you and put you on
the mailing list>
3. Character Name : <the character you are playing in the rpg.>

<self explanatory. put in your character's features>
5. Character Description: /me <this is used to post in the chan so it makes it easier
for you to just have the description of your char instead of having to type it out
each time.>
6. Character's favored weapon (s):<your dominantly used weapon, the one you have been
trained to use. whether or not you actually possess this weapon depends on the area
you are in and will have to be decided by the gm who approves your character.>
7. Character equipment and property in Reality:< land, vehicles, computer equipment,
attire, first aid items you carry around, cell phones, etc. Make sure it's listed
here in the copy of your sheet that the gm has at the time of RP. >.
8. Character equipment and property in The Matrix:<if your character has not been
"liberated" to Reality, then this is where everything you own would be. If they have
been, this property can change often depending on how you and your operators equip
yourself. Again, make sure to keep track of EVERYTHING.>
9. Character Level : <level from 1-7, level 1 being highest and reserved for NPC
villains or good guys beyond capabilities of others. Right now, new characters
entering are all Level 7. Characters from the movies will be given a level or they
can look and see if their level is on the webpage.>
10. Character Experience Points: <awarded by the gm to the character to accrue
towards leveling up of character. beginners start out with 0 and it's your
responsibility to update your sheet as you roleplay more, not the gm's.>
11. Hitpoints: <HP> <Hitpoints are the amount of "Life points" a character has.
Level 7 beginning characters have 100 HP. If reduced to 0 then the character
essentially is Knocked Out or KO'ed and must be revived by someone with First Aid or
EMT skills. If their hitpoints go beyond that to a negative number, then it is time
to write up a new bio sheet. At this point, no character, unless agreed to prior to
the rp really essentially dies, unless its a plot line device. Absolutely no-one dies
in a FreeForm session.>
12. Armament <body armor and protections> <list armor your character is wearing and
the protections if any it possesses to its wearer.>
13. Statistics: <You are going to allocate points to these based on level. Start at
Level 7 and go from there. You can put the points where you wish but keep in mind to
READ the explanations so that you don't over-strengthen a character in one thing and
give them nothing in another valuable statistic. There are 6 base statistics to the
game: Strength, Dexterity, Perception, Willpower, Charisma and Knowledge. You have a
maximum you can place in the statistic individual slot of 100 points. The 100 stands
even if you add items to yourself that would improve and go beyond 100.
Also, you will want to put some of those points in skills, because if your character
attempts something he/she doesn't have points in as a skill, they must use the base
attribute score in order to make the test. Any skill test that falls into this
category automatically receives a -20 deduction from the result of the test. What you
are going to do with these numbers when the gm asks for a skill check is to add them
together. The total of the attribute + skill - 1 = the highest number the character
can roll and still succeed. For example, the gm asks the pc to make a dexterity test
to see if they can climb a slippery cliff face. If they have a base dex of 50 and a
skill in rock climbing under that at a value of 25, then 50 + 25 - 1 = 74. So if they
roll a 75, they fail the test and slip off the rocks.
You can only ever have a maximum in each statistic of 100. For level 1 characters,
this will be discussed separately and there aren't many of them so this should not
concern the majority of people save for game masters that possess Level 1 non-player
characters. Keep in mind that the USE of these statistics is going to be reflective
of whether or not the character is in the Matrix but the statistics themselves will
not change in gameplay. For most beginning characters, they do not know that there
is a Matrix and that their physical bodies are lying with atrophied muscles in an egg
field with pink goo somewhere. Therefore, their Residual Self-Image is whatever they
have been able to make it according to the rules of the Real World, because that is
what the Matrix tries to (and for the most part does) emulate. "Unfortunately,
no-one can tell you what the Matrix is. You have to experience it for yourself."
For the only exception to this rule, see below where the Manipulate Matrix ability
is discussed.
Level 7: base character. this character has 100 points to separate into each
attribute and skill how they see fit.
Level 6: this character has a total of 135 points to separate as he/she sees fit.
Level 5: this character has a total of 200 points to separate as they see fit.
Level 4: this character has a total of 300 points to allocate where he/she wishes.
Level 3: this character has a total of 400 points to place where they wish.
Level 2: this character has a total of 500 points to place where they wish.
Level 1: this character may place a total of 700 points to more after discussion
with Agent_Jones.>

C. PERCEPTION-Powers of observation and problem solving. for determining how in tune
the character is with their surroundings.
Skills and Specializations
Tracking
D. CHARISMA-The indefinable combination of looks and personality that makes people
attractive to others. For determining the character's effect on
others in social situations. A really low score like 10 would be like
Roseanne Barr singing the national anthem and scratching herself. A
medium score such as 50 would be like Al Gore dancing at a news
conference. Odd, but not really as disturbing as the former. A really
high score like 99 might be for someone like Martin Luther King, Jr.
or Mayor Guiliano the day after 9/11. Remember that a high charisma
does not necessarily mean physical beauty, although it certainly
contributes. People have a variety of ways of convincing people to do
things. Words, actions, appearances, and circumstances all combine to
make someone charismatic. It's all in how much the character can
make the target person(s) relate to them on some level enough to get
something done. Bill Clinton is a classic example of this. He has a
very high charisma, because even though we all know he lied about his
personal dealings right to our faces on national television, somehow
he still manages to make people forget that Bill's broken promises
and remember the Bill that clasped his hands together and said "I
feel your pain" instead. Is he physically attractive? Ask people
and you will get varying responses, but I doubt anyone is going to
tell you he's as hot as say, Tom Cruise or Ewan MacGregor. (Asking
Monica doesn't count!) The point is that he can adapt himself to
surroundings and intuitively know what to say and how to say it,
using body language, suggestion, confidence, et cetera. Antonio
Banderas might make you agree to jumping off a bridge just by smiling
at you suggestively, but Malcolm X could convince you and twenty of
your friends to convert to Islam and hold a rally first, then jump
off as your moral duty to the cause. (Just my weird and slipshod
metaphor; please don't take it too seriously.) Which one has the
higher charisma to you?>

Acting
Diplomacy
Con Artistry
Bartering

E. WILLPOWER-perhaps the single most important attribute. it is an expression of how
well the character has unified body, mind, and soul.
Skills and Specializations
Meditation
Buddhist
Yoga
Assertiveness Training
F. KNOWLEDGE-what kinds of things the character has learned through book-study, life
experience, technical training. Knowing how to do something is a test
in itself: actually carrying off such things as a successful acting
performance may require a CHARISMA test.

The Skills and Specializations listed here are certainly not all that are available
to your character. Be imaginative and come up with a few of your own if you want, but
remember they have to be approved by Agent_Jones. >
14. Manipulate Matrix Ability: <Yes> <No> <All characters born inside the Matrix
start off with a No in this category unless otherwise approved by Agent_Jones
or Agent`Smith. Innate abilities will take off of your HP. This reflects that
it is an innate ability but at the same time it is a draining one. Each
innate ability is separate and not to be thought that it works in coalition
with another to spending points to improve it. If a character with innate
abilities is approved, they start off at Level 1 for those abilities unless
otherwise approved by a gm. Take note that the *ability* scale goes the
opposite way from *character* level. Level 1 is weakest in the ability while
Level 5 is highest.>.
Level 1 - expends 10 hp per turn
Level 2 - expends 30 hp per turn
Level 3 - expends 90 hp per turn
Level 4 - expends 270 hp per turn
Level 5 - expends 900 hp per turn
The Manipulate Matrix ability is the ability that some people have to manipulate the
matrix when they are inside it to do so-called superhuman feats. If the character has
this skill, then they will be able to boost a statistic of their choice with the
notable exceptions of WILLPOWER and KNOWLEDGE once per round to a pre-determined
level by sacrificing some hitpoints. This sacrifice reflects the fact that, although
people who understand what the matrix is do not necessarily take damage to their
residual self image in the same way that they do their physical bodies, their minds
make it real for the physical body in some way. So someone who has been running at
top speed dodging agents all day in the matrix will eventually become physically
tired in the real world.
How it works:
The character with this ability can choose at the beginning of the round to improve
one of their attributes by expending HP. The attributes you can choose from are:
STRENGTH, DEXTERITY, PERCEPTION, AND CHARISMA. (No, you CANNOT put the bonus into
WIILPOWER itself and keep raising attributes based on that score! There's only *one*
character in the whole game who can do that..) The amount of the bonus that the
person receives is equal to the character's Willpower score divided by *character*
level. So a person who is Level 5, has a Level 1 Manipulate Matrix Ability and a
Willpower of 60 could increase their speed from 50 to 62, because 60/5=12. At the end
of the round, the character would take 10 HP of damage and the bonus DISAPPEARS
unless you are declaring to the gm that you renew the ability at the beginning of
the next round. In that case, you continue to accrue damage, but for every round you
hold it the damage is doubled. So in the case of someone who raised their dexterity
from 50 to 62 the first round, they take 10 HP at the end of the round and the next
round they hold it they take 20. If they continue holding the statistic at that
level, at the end of the third round they take 40 HP, the fourth 80HP, and so forth.
(For a discussion of the combat system itself and what "rounds" exactly mean, see
the rules posted elsewhere on the webpage.)>
15. Occupation : <Your occupation in the Matrix or the Real World (or both!). Maybe
you are a thief, business owner, Zion freedom fighter, police
officer, etc. >
16. Character History :< a brief detailed history of your character that is truthful
so that it can be approved of. don't leave stuff out that is
supposed to be a mystery! Your gm *has* to know. If someone
is GMing for you and suddenly it comes up that your character
meets the long lost father or whatever that you have secretly
made up and haven't put down here, then it doesn't happen.
The GM is *not* required to allow it and can make up whatever
they want in that case, like your father isn't Neo like you
thought, but Ronald McDonald.>
Special Notes : <anything that doesn't fit anywhere else and can be mentioned for
special consideration or because it is an added thing to the
character of importance>

This game will run, no matter where your character comes from,
1 year after the events in THE First MATRIX movie.
Send this Character Sheet to Agent_Jones or Agent_Smith upon completion and please
rename the Character Sheet to your character's name for filing purposes. You can
email to <[email protected]> or <[email protected]>
This is meant as an aid to doing up the character sheets, and by no means
represents all the skills or abilities possible in the RPG. You can invent some or
refer to the webpage for extra things; just remember that everything is subject to
approval. Depending on where your character is coming from determines that some slots
on the sheet may not be required to fill in. If your character hasn't seen the
MATRIX, for example, you do not fill in "Manipulate Matrix" at the start of this
game. Any further questions just e-mail or ask in channel.

This section gives an example of how a beginning character's BioSheet might look when it is ready to be turned in for approval. They may or may not be Violet's actual statistics, but that's for me to know and yadda yadda yadda. You may have more or less information about your character or have distributed your statistics differently.
There's also nothing wrong with writing a single background paragraph on your character instead of a novel like what I wrote as long as it has the basic information in it that describes the major events in their lives and what makes them the person they are now. Are they kind, cold-blooded, nervous, outgoing, shy, etc.? What do they love and/or hate? What kinds of things would they never, ever do in a million years no matter how many cookies you gave them? These are the kinds of things that flesh out the bare facts that represent your character, so take a little time and do it right.
Pictures of characters are great too, even if you draw stick figures or chibi-style. I'd love to put them up on the web with your permission. Just remember, DO NOT TURN IN A BIOSHEET IN ANYTHING BUT TEXT(*.txt)FORMAT. I won't even open it, it will go straight in the trash. If you want to send me a picture talk to me on dalnet first and send it dcc.

16. Character History :
Violet's father was a student activist in Beijing at the time of the Tiananmen Square incident. She and her mother escaped to the United States after the massacre: her father remained in prison and died of pneumonia a year after he arranged for friends to smuggle his wife and child out of the country. She and her mother live in upstate New York now, where her mother has re-married a man with a son a year older than Violet. Her mother, now Zhou Wang Lun, works as a lab technician during the day at the same place her step-father works for as an engineer.
Coming into an American grade school was difficult for Bai Fu Ling, especially being the only Asian in her class with rudimentary English skills. No-one could pronounce her Chinese name right, calling her "Bye-bye" or "Fool" or other moronic variations. A girl named Kelly became her best friend when she started calling her "Violet" instead in 7th grade and the name stuck, Kelly taking the name from a particularly vividly-colored dress that Fu Ling was fond of wearing.
Once she actually figured out how to speak the language, however, people found out that the seemingly shy, quiet refugee had plenty to say about everyone and everything. Whether or not it was always the truth is another matter, but it was almost always funny. She made a lot of new friends and lost old ones because of it, and learning to speak English was the biggest turning point for her in her life. That was when she first discovered computers and the Internet. She had found a way to practice talking to other people from all walks of life where they didn't make fun of her accent. If they did she could just ignore them and find someone else to talk to.
Mostly, however, there was one person who helped her the most. That person's online alias was Kang, and it is her secret ambition to meet Kang and find out who they really are. She never told anyone about Kang, not even her best friend Kelly. Violet makes top grades in school and is on the track team, not the fastest but still a solid sprinter. She has been accepted at Cornell University, but although she gets a lot of pressure from her mother and teachers she still hasn't made up her mind whether she really wants to go or not. Other students who don't have the grades she does resent her and competition between those in the advanced classes is vicious. It seems her only true friend is Kelly, a 19 year old vocational school drop-out she met while Kelly was repeating 7th grade.
