TODAY'S BLOG
SEPTEMBER 14, 2005:

The continuing quest for scapegoats to take the heat off the local pols continues unabated in Louisiana.  The latest is the indictment of two nursing home owners where 34 people were found dead, probably drowned.

It will be interesting to see how this one gets spun.  I expect the media to portray the hapless couple who ran the place as a couple of evil profiteers who ran the place as a Dickensian shop of horrors, then hightailed it to higher ground with a suitcase full of their ill-gotten cash; meanwhile, poor Gram and Uncle Boudreaux were left to see how long a hot water bottle will keep you afloat.

I susperct the real truth is that the people who owned the place were caught up in the confusion and contradictory orders that were flying around at the time.  They were faced with a dammed if you do/don't set of choices as to what was best for the poor old geezers int heir care, were probably worried that some of them were in such bad shape that the rigors of an evacuation would be worse for them than riding it out. But as Pat Dye says, hindsight is 50/50.

If you really want to indict somebody, lets's put the responsibility sqaurely where it belongs: Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco amd Mayor Ray Nagin.  These two inept clods sat back and watched while the state and city that they were sworn to protect were pummeled by a disaster that they had more than adeqaute warning about; in this day and time, it's hard as hell for a hurricane to sneak up on you.  Now they're trying to save their own sorry asses by blaming Bush, Fox News, these poor people who owned this nursing home, and whoever else looks convenient. Get ready for more of this.
