My thought for the day: 6/11/03
By Chris Keith
What if there was a "world vacation day"... This would be a day when not even one person did anything related to business, obligation, or any sort of responsibility. Would it work? Hmm... Sounds kind of impossible to me. Still, imagine how people might react to this. I think for the most part the world would embrace this day and try and take full advantage of it to break away from their daily norm. The celebrations would probably be incredible. What might suffer though? Economy? Seems like it. What about governing bodies (law enforcement, government, etc.) If they took the day off as well, wouldnt the globe explode into a chaotic scene of anarchy? Even when considering this as a possibility, it quickly starts to form itself into a certainty. People would have a previously non-exsistent moment to seize material possessions, endulge urges and fantasies that were before impossible to satisfy, and so on, and so on.
Wait, what if there's a meaning to this? If you were to agree to the fact that people might react this way, then what might you deduct next? First realize that "World Vacation Day" would entail a massive release of control. The pressure of everyday life's neverending obligations, plans, rules, dates, meetings, payments, and responsibilites would be lifted, and thus, our beings would decompress, much like a spring held down, then released. Imagine not one day only, but that one day it is determined that all these aforementioned things dissappear. Would maddness ensume? Yes. We are prisoners, held captive by our everyday actions that control us. The world holds us in a cage. The sign on the front of this cage has words written on both sides; The side facing the inside of the cage reads, "You are free.", and the side facing
outside, "Capitalism".
Thought of the (early) day: 12:28am, 6/12/03
I had a busy day. Busy. When someone says that, what might it bring to mind? Well, usually it entails some mix of tending to what one is expected to do. For me, a lot of what keeps me busy involves a lot of what might occupy your time: School, work, money, planning for the future, etc., bla, yadda, and so on. Yeah, I try and stay ahead of it all... I try and keep with my "plan". Damn it, what the hell is my plan? It might be similar to yours or many other young people; Go to school, work my ass off and graduate. Once I have my degree, I can go out into the glorious shimmery world of corporate America, and become the bitch of an organized tree of people above me in a structured company, or stake my OWN business claim, and make as many people my bitches as possible. I assume there's other alternatives to these two, however, they probably don't give much hope to the individual that must use legal tender as ammo to battle a machine called society. (This is all of us that must do this, by the way.) (Sigh) Where am I going with this? Maybe the idea I'm trying to isolate is that we in this country (and others) are given a choice. Either flow with it or don't. There's no stopping the course that we are all on. Im riding, you're riding. College is just a key step. Shit, I say go with it. I'm going to roll with this. Then again (Thoughtfully gazing to the sky and stroking my chin), perhaps resisting the pull of the inevitability that money has created for us would be some sort of answer. Maybe it would lead to a brighter path down life. Maybe it would recreate the idea of what the American Dream is. (My eyes drop to the ground and I shake my head) Wrong. We have been given a path. It's very creation is because of money, and money will continue to govern it, us, and everything that we do in the interest of neccessity. It will continue to shape how we live so many aspects of our lives and why. Perhaps most simply, money is what will continue to ensure that I (maybe you, maybe everyone) have "busy days" for a long time to come. Time for me to sleep. I have a busy day tommorrow.
