If you love ancient history and you're visiting Rome, Ostia is a total must-see. An archaeological site as large and historically important as Pompeii, it lies roughly 40km downstream of Rome, at what was once the mouth of the Tiber. Ostia was once the port town of Rome, and as such linked the capital city with the rest of the Empire, receiving precious gems, oil, wine and foodstuffs which were stored all over the town in large warehouses (horrea). The effects of silting, and a change in the course of the Tiber River means that Ostia is now 4km inland, and it takes only 20 minutes to reach from Rome.

Perfectly complementing a visit to the
Colosseum and the Roman Forum, which were essentially the showcase of the Roman Empire, a visit to Ostia gives you a more personal understanding of daily life in ancient times. Our knowledgeable and entertaining guides take you to all the best parts of  this enormous (and, without a guide, rather overwhelming) site. You'll see bath houses, apartment blocks, luxurious villas, latrines and laundries. You'll also see numerous temples and form an understanding of the complexity and importance of religion in ancient times.

> Porta Romana and Decumanus Maximus
